Remote Desktop
I Have Server 2008 R2 and I am trying to use remote desktop to get into a Dell box with XP SP3 on it. No luck, all I get is "Destination host unreachable". I can log into it from a vista box and a linux box just fine. I tried turning off the fire wall, I can ping my nic and my router. (from the server). What gives? AL31

Destination host unreachable almost always means a routing issue or a network misconfiguration. Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the 1) The XP system you are connecting to 2) The working vista box 3) The broken 2008 R2 client -- Mike Burr

Hi, I tried turning off the fire wall, I can ping my nic and my router. (from the server). >> Did you mean you can ping the Windows XP computer from the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer? Did you ping the computer name or the IP address of the computer? By the way, you can check the following post to see whether you can resolve the issue. Guest OS cannot ping host but can ping vice versa http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2virtualization/thread/c73b3940-eda0-4e76-b22f-219cf47cbcd7/ Best Regards, Vincent Hu

Your DNS server should have 192.168.1.98 instead of loopback address. The DHCP server should hand out 192.168.1.98 as primary DNS server address. You should have the ISP's DNS server addresses in forward lookup of your DNS server. This way clients can find DC and also path to internet. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Thanks I'll give that a try. But I have one question - shouldn't the DNS server look to itself, 127.0.0.1 for dns resoulition? I'm confused 192.168.1.98 is the server address, witch is the domain controller, witch needs DNS installed to work?? what is the difference between 192.168.1.98 and 127.0.0.1 as far as DNS goes? AL31.

1.) Yes but just don't use the loopback address. 2.) If you have an AD domain then you should also add the integrated DNS role. 3.) In most cases probably nothing. It is just considered bad pratice to use loopback for DNS server address. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional -Microsoft MVP [Windows]
