RRAS ftp Issue

Folks

Due to an inheritated network I have a client that is using RRAS to connect to the itnernet even though thier is a hardware firewall infront of it. he issue is that when we ftp from inside the network we get the login banner and the username request, but when it is enters and i hit return the connection comes up connection closed by remote host. The strange thing is that the server with RRAS installed works fine and we can access ftp from it.

The server in questions is 2003 R" and is up to date as of three weeks ago with patches. insidently the issue appears to have happend since the past lot of updates. any help would be great

Hi,

I am having the same issue. I have a Windows 2003 server using RRAS to connect directly to the internet through a Qwest DSL Modem and Basic Firewall enabled. I can FTP from the server to our home office with no issue. I cannot ftp either through DOS or Internet Explorer from any workstation on the domain connecting through the server. I have tried disabling the basic firewall momentarily, but with no fix. I've also tried disabling and enabling FTP Server through the "Services and Ports" tab on the Internet object of the NAT/Basic Firewall option. Is this a router issue? Gateway issue??

Thanks!

Found it. Stop the Application Layer Gateway service on the server. That will fix the issue almost instantly. This was posted on a TechNet news posting under "XP clients ftp".

Recently abandonded using a hardware router/firewall for my advanced home network due to the third device failure in so many years.

I have a Hyper-V server at home with several VM's.  I host my own exchange, etc... as a dev environment for my work.

Anyway... to the point.  I setup a Win 2012 R2 VM on my Win 2012 R2 Hyper-V host with two interfaces (one LAN one to the ISP cable modem).

I extended the interfaces on the Virtual switch as needed for the VM to have both interfaces (with IPv4 disabled on the interface on the host, so it's not communicating with the cable modem).

I setup RRAS on the Win 2012 R2 VM, with success as a NAT router for my LAN. All was working great, except FTP connections. I disabled the "Application Layer Gateway" on the RRAS VM as this forum suggests, and bingo, FTP began working on the LAN client computers.

Amazing how after several OS iterations, the issues are similar.  Thanks!!
