RRAS as a router on Win2k8 Issues
Hi, I can't seem to figure this one out, what seems to be quite straight forward to use Win2k8 as a router between two subnets. Here is the scenario: Client1 - 192.168.110.2/24 dg 192.168.110.1 static route: 10.1.10.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.110.26 192.168.110.2 | | 192.168.110.26 dg 192.168.110.1 Win2k8 Router 10.1.10.1 dg (blank) | | Client 2 10.1.10.21 dg 10.1.10.1 RRAs is installed on the Win2k8 server with LAN routing enabled From client1, I'm not even able to ping 10.1.10.1 tracert shows that its going correctly to 192.168.110.26 So the two subnets are not talking to each other... Any ideas on what I could be missing? Thanks

Bill, Thanks for the reply, I was under the impression, you either set the route on the gateway router, or you can set a static route on each client. As I only have one client in the 192.168.110.x subnet, that was easy enough. But it still doesn't work!

That is correct. If you can't set the static route on the gateway router, you can set it on each machine in the subnet. That will work if it is configured correctly. How are you checking connectivity? Most firewalls block ping by default these days. Bill

I'm able to ping and get a reply from the gateway itself to both the subnets. I just can't ping across the subnet, or ping the router's other subnet interface from the clients. There isn't much to configure, I just need to set one static enter on the 192.168.110.2 client for the 10.1.10.x network (that is the only client which needs to route). I'm suspecting my RRAS is not configured correctly, but how can I tell?

If you can ping the gateway from both subnets, both your static route and the router config must be OK (the router only needs to be configured for LAN routing). A reply from the gateway router can only get to the new subnet if these are both correct. Are you sure it isn't just a firewall blocking ping on the target machine? Use tracert to see where it is failing.Bill

Nah, it never worked, but we implemented the solution without the subnet routing, thanks for all the help though. Cheers
