RRAS - Is it possible.
Hi, can anyone advise whether it is possible to have RRAS dial on demand to multiple sites from a pool of dial-up modems? e.g. 15 branch sites, 1 Head Office Server Server has 5 modems Application on Server (Win 2008 R2 x64) wants to rotate through each site on a regular basis and initiate the connection to the site. Thanks Scott.

Hi, Thank you for your post here. What do you mean when you say rotate through each site on a regular basis? Do you want to dial the connection to the remote site with a modem by order? If this is true, I believe that it is not possible to achieve that. If I misunderstand your question, could you please tell more about what exactly do you want to have?

Hi, I would like the head office to continuously cycle through the list of remote sites in order contacting each with any modem that is available. By design the remote sites can not initiate the communications to head office, and there is more remote sites than there are modems. I guess my question is: When creating a dial on demand interface do you have to specify a modem to use, or can you have the interface use any modem that is currently not in use? If you do have to specify a modem for the interface, can a modem be defined in more than one dial on demand interface? (Obviously if the modem is in use by one interface, then others can not use it) Thanks Scott.

I decided to setup a Win2008 Server today to test this, and I think I may have answered my own questions. Forgive me if I am wrong, RRAS is all quite new to me. And if there are other solutions or something I am missing please let me know. 1. When setting up a dial on demand interface using a dial up modem, you set the modem at creation time. So the use of a 'pool' of modems is not available. 2. You can define multiple dial on demand interfaces all using the same dial up modem. If the modem is in use the interface is set to unreachable when it tries to connect. This is what I would expect. Unfortunately it looks like the static route to that interface's destination address gets removed from the routing table, so subsequent attempts to that destination will never initiate the dial on demand interface. Does that sound correct? Scott.
