RDP session freeze when resizing RDP window

Hi

since last week friday a user reports a freezing RDP session when he resize the RDP window (to move the session window to another screen (PC has 3 screens connected)) of a  . The RDP target is a windows 2008 R2 RDS. Last Friday there were many MS updates installed on this PC.

I determined that the issue must be related to the PC, if user connects from another PC to RD-Server the problem doesn't exists. But i have no starting point to search for the reason. There are no warnings or errors in local eventlog. RDP connections to another RD-Server work fine.

Any hint where to start to solve this issue?

I have the same issue since doing some updates. I have a Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit PC that I use to connect to a Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. If I try to maximize or resize the window, the RDP session shows the security screen (lock computer, task manager, etc) and hangs. If I do CTL-ATL-END then it redisplays the screen, I'm able to select task manager and it works again, only to hang should I try to resize again.

I've verified it's not the laptop by using another PC to connect to the laptop. very annoying.

Hi Carsten,

Firstly, would you please let us know the OS version of this PC?

Meanwhile, please make sure that this PC has latest version of RDC installed.

Thanks.

Hi Jeremy,

the mstsc.exe has version 6.3.9600.16415 and the PC is running win 7 (ultimate).

The user disabled Aero Design in the affected RDP Connection and afterwards he was able to resize the RDP session window without freeze.

Hi Carsten,

Thanks for the reply.

It seems that the user has updated his RD client to RDP 8.0. If so, please note that Aero Glass is not supported.

Hi Jeremy

I have the same problem. Since the last Windows Update on the server (SBS 2011) or Client (Win7 Ultimate, 64-bit). In KB2592687 they mention a GPO setting to enable/disable RDP 8.0. I wanted to disable it but this GPO setting in my fully patched SBS 2011 doesn't exist.

How can I flip back to RDP 7.1 or what ever was active before. I never had any issues/problems with it and want to have Aero Glass activated in RDP sessions. Deactivating Desktop Composition in the RDP configuration does about the same for the RDP session as deactivating Aero Glass, means AG will only work in RDP sessions if Desktop Composition is enabled.

Any chance to get it switched back to RDP 7.1?

I found it myself. I had to uninstall KB2592687. Maybe this one was offered as optional update and was marked to be installed.

I found it here:

I apologize for resurrecting this old thread, but maybe someone will find the following suggestion useful:

I solved the issue by manually selecting the desired connection experience on the property tab of the Remote desktop connection client, and then I unchecked the "desktop composition" box.
