Question about the 2008 launch events
MS is providing Windows Server 2008 and two other programsfor attending the launch events in 2008 (currently happening)I need to know if Server 2008 is a full version or if it is time limitedin any way. Some people have said it only comes with a 1 year license. Any folks from MS that can give us the correct info asto the license that comes with it ? ? .. Note this would be forhome use, not in a business setting, Thanks

Windows Server 2008 Enterprise RTM (32 and 64 bit) + a product key (this is a not for resale full packaged product - or in Microsoft parlance - NFR FPP). The EULA is for internal and testing purposes only. In other words, you are violating the EULA if you put this into production. Visual Studio 2008 Standard RTM bits. NFR FPP. Standard VS EULA. SQL Server 2008 CTP 5.0 with standard evaluation EULA plus a voucher for redeeming for final bits when available. These have standard one-year licenses. The product will not stop working after one year, but you will be non-compliant if the license isn't renewed. tgc

No plans to resell it so not an issue. I did not know that Windows Server was a 1 year license that needed a renewal each year. I expected it towork like most programs. Once you pay for it you use it as long as you like, except in some cases, an upgradeto the next new major release would require a new key and or fee.

Hello, For licensing questions, you can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact information in their locations. I hope this helps. In answer to Ted81 ... Michael is from Australia; I'm from the US. The information I presented is what I received from our local launch personnel. tgc

I will check the schedules and see if & when one is close by.They seem to have removed the one that was for Edison, NJ.It would be worth going to and getting some good informationabout the new programs. One other site said you needed CAL'sto connect to the server. What are they and when are they needed ? ?How do you get them ? ?

bruce bubelloasked: "What is a CAL"? A CAL is a client access license. A CAL is required for every device that accesses a Windows Server services. So if you have a desktop that is accessing a file share on Windows Server, it needs a CAL. If you have a device that is receiving a DHCP address from a Windows Server, you need a CAL. CALs are associated with the version of the operating system. So, if you have CALs for Windows Server 2003, you will need to upgrade those CALs for Windows Server 2008. lambaste asked: What is "parlance" and how does it relate to the service pack release? Parlance means a manner of speaking; a vernacular; an idiom. It has absolutely nothing to do with the service pack release. tgc
