Problem with 0x0000007b
Hi,
my software: Windows 2008 R2 Ent
my hardware: vmware virtual machines, scsi controller: paravirtual
what's the history:
I have two virtual machines with Windows 2008 Std R2 on them. They are the same (same hardware, software, history) so from now on to the point where they differ I will describe only one of them.
About two months earlier I've installed Windows on them. They had one virtual disk, so it had to be partitioned to parts. It wasn't the best solution so we decided to put the partitions to single disks, so we could extend the partitions along with disks
with no decrease in performance. In that time the server were used in production environment so the reinstallation wasn't an option. There were 6 partitions, so we attached 5 new disks to machine (one disk for both 100MB reserved and system partitions, the
rest was mapped 1-1). We created RAID1 for each partition and disk. After RAID resynchronization server was shutdown, the main disk with all the partitions was disconnected and the serwer was started up. Obviously it used secondary plex, but was working fine.
Two weeks ago, decision was made to upgrade Windows to Enterprise version.
Upgrade was made with command:
Dism /online /Set-Edition:ServerEnterprise /ProductKey:489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y
It worked and server restarted with no problems.
Minutes later I needed to shutdown the server to change some settings on vmware side. The "memory hotplug" and "cpu hotadd" settings were turned on. The the problem occured for the first time.
what's the problem:
After changes in vmware the server gets 0x0000007b BSOD during boot time. We've noticed that the only way to boot system was to use "Last Known Good Configuration" option. After that it is possible to shutdown and startup server with standard options couple
times(variable number), but after that it gets 0x0000007b again and needs to start with "Last Known Good Configuration".
Turning off "memory hotplug" and "cpu hotadd" didn't fixed the thing.
Now, where the servers differ:
To leave the production servers to production decision was made to create copies of both machines including the system disks only. On those copies one server behaves just like the original one (possible 0x0000007b), the other one gets 0x0000007b all the time,
no matter what boot options are chosen.
We've tried installing hotfix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2344941 , but after installing it on the "working" machine copy,
we get 0x0000007b all the time.
Any suggestions how to repair the system or what is the cause of the problem?
Cheers,
dimongoo

Hello,
bug check code 0x7F: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff559244(VS.85).aspx
Please use Microsoft Skydrive to upload dump files (c:\windows\minidumps). Once done, post a link here.

Please provide you VM environment version, I have seen this on ESX3 and ESX4 where you have the old VM Client tools installed.

Hi,
environment version ESX4.1
all of possible dumping options:
- Kernel dump
- Mini memory dump
- Memory dumps
are not working. Moreover, after changing dumping option, I always get BSOD. As usual Last Known Working Configuration, allows me to boot system and the dumping option is set as it was before changing.
As addition I include boot log:
Microsoft (R) Windows (R) Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

Is there a file named MEMORY.DMP under c:\windows\? If yes, upload it. Are you sure that there is no files under c:\windows\minidumps?

As I wrote earlier, none of dumping options worked, ergo there is no memory.dmp in c:\windows\.

Then try all resolutions mentioned in the article I gave. Also, disable all security softwares and update all possible drivers. If this does not help, it is possible that you have a hardware problem (especially with your processor). In this case, it will
be better to contact Microsoft CSS.
Also, don't forget to uninstall all programs that you don't need.

Hi,
I found solution to the problem, no need to contact Microsoft CSS. After using RAID1 the disks where dynamic. Probably after disconnecting the main disk, and then doing licence upgrade cause some inconsistency in LDM database. I converted all disks from dynamic
to simple and it worked beautifully.
The only problem I'm facing now is that with appropriate licence(Enterprise) key the system gets activated properly but it uses only 1CPU, 4GB and cannot RDP to server. When it's disacctivated there's now problem.
