Problem running with two configured network cards
Hi I have setup a new Windows 2008 R2 server in our DMZ to act as a ftp server. It is configured with two network cards one on 192.168.7.7 called DMZ and the other on 172.20.0.200 called Internal. The DMZ card is connected to our VLAN Switch to make it availiable on the internet and the Internal card is connected to one of our core switches. The internal card is used to backup the server as we were finding to slow to backup through the VLAN switch. We use a script to to disable the DMZ card and then enable the Internal card before the backup and another script to disable the internal card and enable the DMZ card after the backup. This works OK on other server servers in our DMZ but this is the first time we have tried this with Windows 2008 R2 all other DMZ server are Windows 2003 R2. The problem we have is when the DMZ card is enabled and the Internal card disabled we lose network connectivity on the DMZ card. When we try to do a NSlookup it appears to be trying to use the DNS server set on the Internal card. The only way to get the connect back is to restart the server. I have done some fault finding but it does not appear to put any entries in the event log. At first it appeared that this was happening at random times but on further investigation it appears this happens when we log off the server. Has any one got suggestion on how to set this up as we need to be able to use both cards. Many Thanks Mark Toussaint

One of the caveats of multihoming. I assume it's not a DC. Have you tried changing the binding order to make the external card the first in the list?Ace Fekay MVP, MCT, MCITP Enterprise Administrator, MCTS Windows 2008 & Exchange 2007 & Exchange 2010, Exchange 2010 Enterprise Administrator, MCSE & MCSA 2003/2000, MCSA Messaging 2003 Microsoft Certified Trainer Microsoft MVP - Directory Services Complete List of Technical Blogs: http://www.delawarecountycomputerconsulting.com/technicalblogs.php This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

Hi Mark, Thanks for posting here. May I know how did we disable the active NIC on server via script ? what was the interface state shown in netsh interface show interface result ? Actually with proper routing setting on mulithomd server we dont have to force the server to send the traffic form proper NIC by the method about disabling and enabling NIC. Could you show us the ipconfig /all and route print results from this server when issue occurred ? Chapter 5 IP Routing http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727001.aspx Meanwhile, it seems this server will connect to internet and intranet at same time , multihoming may not a good idea or please set strong host model for it: Strong and Weak Host Models http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.09.cableguy.aspx Regards, Tiger Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.
