Problem booting after a disk crash
I could not find any suitable forum for Windows Server 2000, so I am posting here... Please advice where can I find suitable forum. System configuration IO controller Adaptec 5405 4x 1TB SAS HDD in RAID1+0 (16GB C:, 1900GB D:) Windows 2000 Advanced server Disks manager disk state Original: C: (system, boot), D: Now : C: (system) encapsulated in extended partition, D: (boot) Chronology and already taken steps 1 of the disks failed The disk was changed with a working disk At next boot the system did not start and showed NTLDR missing error Recovery Console from Windows 2000 CD Chkdsk => all the disks are ok Disk letters for C: and D: got changed (C: disk is now data disk, D: disk is now os disk) Fixmbr, Fixboot C:, Fixboot D:, copy files required to boot windows from os disk (D: in recovery console) to data disk (C: in recovery console) Did not change anything in boot.ini Windows boots up all applications work, OS disk is C: as it should be, DATA disk is D: as it should be Disk manager OS disk C: is marked as (system) but somehow got encapsulated in a extended partition, Disk manager DATA disk D: is marked as a (boot) I read the following kb articles http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318728 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188 but am not confident with the procedure to put the system to original state (before the error occured). How to remove undelying extended partiton How to switch boot functionality back to the OS disk from the DATA disk. Please advice. Andrej

Hi, KB223188 provide the procedure to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows, please follow the procedure to perform a restore. By the way, please back up your registry keys before you make this change as the notes in the KB. If issue continues, you may need to have a reinstallation of the system. Best Regards, Vincent Hu
