Printer Migration Wizard - errors
I'm using Print Management MMC to export and then import printers, from 2 severs to 1. The source servers are x32 and the destination is x64. A few of the printers on the source servers have x64 drivers, most don't. I just did a test run - exported on a source and then imported that file on the destination. In Event Viewer I got quite a few 31 and 33 events. Looks like the 31's warn that the source driver was x32, that the destination is x64, and it will *attempt* to then find the x64. Some are found. If they aren't I get a 33 id, saying it didn't find the x64 driver. But I also get a lot of 92 id's. Which states: Printbrm.exe (the Printer Migration Wizard or the command-line tool) failed to restore print queue PU253-HP M2727. The restore process will continue, skipping this queue. Error: 0x80070705. The printer driver is unknown. But, when all is said and done, it looks like I have most of the drivers, forms and ports on the destination server. But NO printers. None. I don't understand the results. Seems like I should have had, at least, the printers from the source server that had x64 drivers. How did I end up with none?

As I see you have got driver problems. Have a look to this thread about a similar problem: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverprint/thread/54cf609c-ba21-47be-9718-172685c80133 This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.Microsoft Student Partner Microsoft Certified Professional Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator: Security Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer: Security Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuration Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure, Configuration

I was reading this thread when I checked on my post and saw your link to a similar situation: http://int.social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-CA/winserverprint/thread/ae509a31-5f1a-4933-8945-b9277779f33c Thanks! Regardless of the errors I received, the printers with x64 drivers from the source should be showing up on the destination server after the import/export. Everything I read about this is pointing to the problem being: 1.) the x64 driver should be on the source server before performing the export 2.) if the x64 is on the source, it should match the x64 driver name on the destination server. Well, I have some printers on the source server that already have the x64 driver installed, and they match exactly the drivers on the destination server. For example, there is a Toshiba 4520 PCL 6 x64 driver on the source, and on the source there is the same driver with the same name and version on the destination server. Same thing with the HP Universal Printer Driver PCL 6. But NONE of the printers on the source server show on the destination server after the import/export. What am I missing?

Send the driver list from the 32bit source. Use print management to create the list from mmc. If the failure for this printer is 0x80070706 then the print processor is missing on the 64bit machine. How many printers have been restored at this point? Is the destination 2008 R2 or 2008?Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

I'll look up the code tomorrow at work and post it. About a dozen of the printers that are on the x32 servers have x64 bit drivers. But no printers have restored on the 2008 R2 box. I find that odd.

I'm not interested in the list of printers only the drivers at this point. Alan Morris Windows Printing Team I don't seem to have any 0x80070706 errors. I have event ID's 31, 33 and 92. The 92's contain either error 0x80070707 or 0x800706d9. Here is the list of drivers from one of the x32 servers. I compared a couple x64 drivers; the Toshiba 4520 PCL 6 and the HP Universal printer driver. Both have the same name on the x32 source and on the x64 destination server. But no printer gets installed on the 2008 R2 server. ------------------------------------------------------ Driver Name Environment Driver Version Driver Isolation Provider Server Name Print Processor Any x86 drivers and ports you do not use on the 2003 machine you should delete. There was a security fix in the spooler on 2008 R2 for separator page locations but this should not block a printer restore. For the HP Universal driver, you should install the 64bit driver on the destination server before the restore to get the package aware install of the driver. For the older HP models I suggest installing the drivers off a Server 2003 x64 CD to the destination. I'm not sure on the 6d9 error unless the spooler is terminating partway into the restore. Make sure you have enabled the policy for Print Driver Isolation on all print drivers. Enable this and stop and start Print Spooler service. Alan Morris Windows Printing Team My mistake, it was 0x80070705 not 0x80070707. Make sure you have enabled the policy for Print Driver Isolation on all print drivers. I can do that. Is that a trouble shooting step to get around the fact that existing x64 printers are not being installed on the 2008 R2 server? For the older HP models I suggest installing the drivers off a Server 2003 x64 CD to the destination. On the source server, before the export, correct? On the destination server I downloaded the HP Universal Print Drivers. When I ran the file it required that I install a printer - I chose a local printer, LPT1 (even though there is no printer). Otherwise it would not install the driver. I'm trying to come up with a start-to-finish plan on this. So far, the Printer Migration Wizard has not worked at all. Out of 170 printers, not one migrated. And this seems like a fairly typical migration. When I do the import on the 2008 R2 machine, as I mentioned in another post, I do get ports, drivers and forms. I haven't done a count to see if all came over. But, as I continue to test and troubleshoot this - for example after I've enabled a GPO for "override print driver execution..." - the next step would be to export and import again. Can I keep repeating that and leave the ports, drivers and forms on the destination server each time? Or do they first have to be removed before I do a subsequent import?

At this point you might as well just add the 64bit drivers to the destination machine. It's best to have the drivers on the source so you have 32bit and 64bit drivers installed on the destination but if the driver has a language monitor you have to preinstall the 64bit driver since there is no 64bit LM files on the source (this is most likely the primary issue. absolutely the issue for the Dell devices). If you have any printers that do not have a matching 64bit driver, they cannot migrate until you either change the source server driver used or use the command line config file option to replace the driver used by a printer with a different installed driver. Reading homework, tell your boss It's required by me. Using the command line option will give more specific errors for most failures. http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2011/03/11/cross-architecture-print-server-migrations-speeding-up-the-migration-process.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722360.aspx http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379488(WS.10).aspx Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

In the case of there already being a 64bit driver installed on the source, why would the Language Monitor not be there also? And what is a "language monitor"?

For the older HP models I suggest installing the drivers off a Server 2003 x64 CD to the destination. I don't see how I'm going to be able to load drivers on the 32bit source server, from a 64bit 2003 CD. I just tried it, where are the printer drivers on the CD?

Language monitors load the modules from system32. When installing cross platform drivers, the language monitor file for the non native chipset are not copied to system32. A language monitor can query the device for status. Many also perform toner and ink level checking.Alan Morris Windows Printing Team

That's just the add on componets shipped in 2003 R2. You need the OS media. Under the AMD64 directory you will find ntprint.inf You may need to expand the files out of the driver.cab fileAlan Morris Windows Printing Team

I called Microsoft and opened a case. The problem was, the firewall service on the destination server was stopped and disabled. Once I enabled that service and started it, the printers from the source server that had both 32bit and 64bit drivers would import on the destination server, when the import was run again. So my final step will be to load 64bit drivers on the source servers, and export/import again, and I should be good. Thanks.
