Printer Driver Installation During Connect

Hi

I've read a lot of forums and this issue has been discussed many times. I've tried to follow the suggestions, but still the same issue.

The issue is simple: We are using GPO to deploy network printers. The domain is set to level 2012R2 and the print server is also 2012 R2. We use the same procedure for printers such as HP, Konica Minolta and that's fine. It this case I need to deploy a Brother MFC-8510DN printer and it this case the drivers are missing on the Windows 7 Clients and have to be installed from the print server. Standard users are then asked for admin credentials, and domain admins still have to click the button to install the driver. This means that the printer is not automatically deployed to anyone, not to admins either, only if they add the printer manually from the server and click the button to install the driver.

To solve this I've created a new GPO:

Computer Configuration --> Policies --> Windows Settings --> Security Settings --> Local Policies/Security Options --> Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers (Disabled)

I've also laborated with Point and print settings:

User Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Templates --> Controlpanel/Priters --> Point and Print restrictions

...but it doesnt work at all.

I appreciate if someone can help with this issue!

Thank you

I downloaded a few of the offered Brother drivers, and peeked inside the INF files of each.

none of them seem to be package-aware

some of them are WHQL-certified by Microsoft, but not certified for WS2012R2

You might be able to use them, but I can't test it, since I don't have an MFC-8510DN

Possibly, Brother technical support could advise you best.

the drivers I found:

Enhanced Generic PCL driver

UPD PCL

UPD PS

Full driver & software package

If you search this Print/Fax forum for "Brother MFC" you'll find various people have had issues with Brother drivers in the past, and the common problem seems to be that Brother don't offer drivers which are package-aware drivers.

(or, if they do, they are not simple to find)

This setting does not apply to any client other than Windows XP and Windows Vista, thus it is working by design when the clients are Windows 7 and working perfectly....if you have Vista SP1 client.

For Windows  and greater, only the Computer Configuration --> Policies --> Administrative Templates --> Control panel/Priters --> Point and Print restrictions

will have an impact.   Make this setting change and let us know if that resolves the issue you are having.

Thanks

Hi

I have tried several of the printer drivers as suggested, for example Enhanced Generic PCL driver is in use right now. This doesn't work. The same issue.

I have also tried to change the point and print settings, but I haven't found a solution.

As I understand the Point and Print restrictions are only for Vista and XP?

I have tried to enable and set the option to not ask for credentials, and I have tried to disable the setting under both Computer and User Configuration part in GPO.

I have also had the same issue earlier with a Canon copying machine, I never solved it, but that printer has been replaced now.

When I try to manually add the printer from a Non Admin user account the dialog prompting for admin credentials shows up for this Brother Printer.

We are using Windows 7 Pro X86 and X64.

Suggestions?

For Point and Print Policy, I'm assuming the pop up you are referring to is the one asking if the print server is trusted.

Disabling the Computer version of the policy should cause the pop up not to be displayed.

Are you using the Brother driver from Windows Update?  If not switch to this driver

Driver Name   Environment Version ProviderPrint Processor PackagedType   Driver Date
Brother MFC-8510DN Printer Windows x64 1.5.0.0 Brother winprint false Type 3 - User Mode 7/12/2012

Then you can change the policy on the clients to grab the WU driver if there are issue downloading from the server.

I've disabled Point and Print under User and Computer Configuration now and it seems to work without prompting for credentials after I earlier clicked OK in the Windows to allow installation of printer drivers.

I'm using the driver suggested by Justin Gu
