Print server restoration

Hi techies,

I am planning for Print migration in my environment, the requirement is

Migration of Printers from windows server 2003 R2 (*64)to windows server 2012

Nearly 40 HP printers with different drivers, names and security settings are taken backup using Print brm tool from server and to be restored in server 2012.

So now I have two questions

1. Will this all printer get restored in Server 2012 with drivers and IP settings and works  ?

2. Current users using the printers installed from the windows server 2003(OldPrint server ) will also be able to use the same without any errors after the  printers are migrated to windows 2012 R2 (New Print server)?

Or What should be followed to restore the printers without forcing  the current users to face any errors or  re-install after the printer migration is done ?

Its  a critical requirement.. Please advice

thanks and regards

1) the ports for the printers on backup should all be Standard TCP/IP Ports

2) you will need to connect ALL the client machines to the new print server share

If the New server name is the same as the old server name, then the client machines will connect to the new server without issue.

Thanks for the reply morris

but i have tested this scenario in test environment, Its not working.

I have installed a HP 2015 model  printer in windows server 2003 R2 with  2003  drivers and connected to a client. It works perfectly

Soon I have shutdown the W2K server and  renamed the same IP to another  windows server 2012 and configured the same printer with 2012 universal driver. Now my client machine shows printer offline

I can't go for reinstallation of printer for all of my users.

please advise any solutions

regards,

sainde

Hi Sainde,

Please confirm the printer can be ping and the 2012 universal driver apply for the printer model.

If the client shows offline, maybe you can uncheck the SNMP option on the printer properties and then have a test. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties>>Click the Ports tab>>Click Configure Port>>Click to clear the SNMP Status Enabled check box>>click OK, and then click Close.

Best Regards,

Elaine

Hi Sainde,

Did you rename the print server?  I do not understand this statement "  renamed the same IP to another  windows server 2012 ".

If you did not rename the machine, this will not work.  If you are attempting to configure your environment to use a CNAME record, you still work to do.
