PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 experience

Hi,

Does anybody have practical experience with PowerPivot for SharePoint (especially SharePoint 2013) to implement a self-service BI scenario in an on premise environment?  Some questions that Im particular interested in:

What major problems did you experience during the actual implementation?

Experience in connection to existing SQL Server Data Warehouses as a PowerPivot data source?

Authentication of SSAS server in SharePoint mode to existing SharePoint 2013 farm

Resource Load on existing SharePoint application and SQL Server, for example does it make sense to create a dedicated application server for the Excel /PowerPivot service application, for performance / future scalability reasons?

Hardware suggestion for a dedicated SSAS server in SharePoint mode for a total of 1000 PowerPivot users

Thanks

major problems

- make sure that the users have a clear idea as to what they want to SHOW... too often, the BI tools are put out there as though users won't need ANY assistance whatsoever... which isn't the case with ANY "self-service BI"... training is required... establishing guidance and governance is also on the list of "top 10 should-do's"

connecting to existing

- you need at least SQL 2012 SP1 CU4 in order for PowerPivot to support MDX cubes/queries.

- MDX/DAX are reasonably close, but not exactly on-par, in regards to feature parity.

Auth

- follow the guides, no prob... follow blogs, who knows what you'll be doing

Load

- SSAS PowerPivot is NOT a light load. Period. Primarily around memory.

Hardware

- Start with MS recommendations... prepare business for additional memory as adoption incr

Hi Ibmkahm2,

According to your description, you need to implement business intelligence in SharePoint Server 2013, right?

The business intelligence tools for SharePoint Server 2013 include Power View for SharePoint, SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services for SharePoint, Power Pivot for SharePoint, Excel Services, PerformancePoint Services, and Visio Services. Here are some useful links for you reference.
