Please help with KMS and Server 2008??
Ok, last year we purchased 6 Server 2008 licenses and received a key. I was told this was a Volume License Key for Server 2008. So I started loading my servers and activating with the key. I was un-aware of the new volume activation process in Server 2008. Well I have activated the key so much it will not allow me to use it any more. So I called my software rep. They say I need to setup KMS with that key and then it should start working again. I took one of the servers already activated and ran the KMS setup process for a host. I installed KMS with:slmgr -ipk "KMS License"slmgr -atoI see my DNS entry for the server and the other 4 I have activated manully when setting up.So my questions are:1. The 6 servers I activated before having the KMS - will they now activate through the KMS Host? Is there anything I need to do with those 6 workstations?2. I have loaded a new server and was trying to get it to hit/activate to the KMS Host. I know you have to have 5 Servers to activate before it will work, but I thought you should be able to see it request activation. I am not seeing that. I have tried it manually. From my understanding I should be able to just hit activate now with the key that is on the server by default after loading and the KMS host will do the rest. It does not even look like it is trying to activate? Is this correct.I guess I am a bit confused on the process. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

More info:It appears all of the servers I activated with the KMS license are KMS servers. Can I remove that KMS key and active them through the KMS server?I have 6 licenses and 2 more on the way. What happens if I remove the 5 KMS licenses leaving one as my host and activating the other 5 through the KMS host?Would I be able to activate 8 through that even though the license has not been fully purchased or will it not allow me to activate more than 6.

Hello Sandow,You have to change the Product key back to the generic KMS client key for the edition that you have installed. Those keys are listed in this documenthttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303280.aspxUnder the KMS client keys sectionTo change the key, open an elevated cmd promptrun slmgr -ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxwherexxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is the product key of the edition you have installed.Yes the KMS host machine continue to allow the KMS clients to activate as long as the count is sufficient to meet the requirements. Thanks, Darrell Gorter[MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights
