PCs not assigned to group on WSUS

Hi,

I have configured WSUS server and set client-side targeting.
I created Computer group X on WSUS.

I created Group policy and link to OU in AD. I put pc inside this OU.
Group policy sets WSUS server and enables client-side targeting to this specific group X.
I checked Resultant Set of Policy on this PC and it's correctly set.

The problem is that I don't see computer inside group X on WSUS.
I see the PC in Unassigned Computers, but not in group X.

What could be the problem ?

Thank you..

Hi,

on a client computer, open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

What do you see for the value "TargetGroup"?

Does your Computer Group is a 'Sub-Group" ? Like "Computers/All Computers/HeadQuarter/Test Group".

I see the PC in Unassigned Computers, but not in group X.

What could be the problem ?

To properly diagnose this we need to look at a WindowsUpdate.log segment.

Please do the following:

  1. Record the system time of the client.
  2. Reboot the client.
  3. After reboot run this command: wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
  4. Wait 30 minutes.
  5. Starting at the time recorded in Step #1, post ALL of the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log.

On Client - registry - TargetGroup: X

On WSUS server - Update Services console - Group: Computers/All Computers/X

That's why you don't see it in the group named 'X'.

somewhere I put ... instead of real data to protect privacy.

And a totally pointless effort it was at that; what you deleted was essentially meaningless data (for purposes of a human reading the logfile anyway).

2014-09-24 19:24:52:508  740 ed4 PT Initializing simple targeting cookie, clientId = ..., target group = Server, DNS name = wsusserver.mydomain

But if you are going to delete data from the logfile, you probably should use the REPLACE ALL function in your text editor.

Now, the curiosity here is why the group name in the initialization entries at 19:18 (Server-group) doesn't match the targeting cookie entries at 19:24 and 19:39 (Server) .. although, as noted, NONE of them put the client in group 'X'.

The problem is that I don't see computer inside group X on WSUS.
I see the PC in Unassigned Computers, but not in group X.

But referring back to your original statement. The reason why you're seeing this client in "Unassigned Computers" in the console is almost certainly because you did not properly configure the Options -> Computers setting on the WSUS server.

Sorry, Server-group and Server is the same, I manually corrected later in notepad but obviously I'm not good at that :-)

Yes, but server has target group Server, clients have target group X, and that X is nowhere in log file.

Here the server probably tries to add itself to Server group, but it doesn't try to add clients to X group.

Hi,

- Open the Wsus Console

- Go to "Options" -> "Computers" and select the option "Use settings from GPO or registry" (2nd option)

On the client where you have pick the log file, open regedit and look at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

, check that the "TargetGroup" value is set to X and not "Server-Group"

I think that I found the solution.

Replica server does not download Computer Options from Upstream server.

I had set "Use Group Policy or registry settings on computers" only on Upstream server and thought that Replica server downloaded this.

Thanks to all for answering.

Sorry, Server-group and Server is the same, I manually corrected later in notepad but obviously I'm not good at that :-)

Yeah.. if you don't provide *accurate* information in your posts, it is *impossible* for us, who can only read what you post, to provide any sort of accurate responses.

Yes, but server has target group Server, clients have target group X, and that X is nowhere in log file.

THAT machine is not assigned to the group X.

It doesn't get any simpler than that.

It's assigned to the WRONG group. Fix the GPO!
