Odd DNS or Wrong Config
Hi,I have a windows 2008 server serving asDC, installed DNS everything is fine.Consider the domain name ascorp.mydomain.comIf I go to the command prompt and typed ping x, I'll get a reply from x.mydomain.comI feel that there is something wrong with it, what do you suggest ?please note that I had configured the ISP DNS as a forwarder.RegardsRani Shoura

If that is the reply you get, your domain name is mydomain.com, not corp.mydomain.com . Open up the DNS MMC and have a look at the names of the zones.Bill

Bill,It won't be odd if my domain name was like what you had suggested. My dns "Zone Name" is 100% corp.mydomain.com and my primary server is servername.corp.mydomain.com and the responsible person is hostmaster.corp.mydomain.com,I do have 2 name servers servername1.corp.mydomain.com,servername2.corp.mydomain.commy zone type is active directory-integrated primary thanks in advance

hi Rani, when you say ping x , what is the "x" , is this a Netbios name or is it an IP address ?Tests ====a) ping on the dc with the short name == what is the result b) ping from the client which you have joined to the corp.domain.com ==what is the output
c) nslookup from the dc -- is it resolving the ip to fqdn
d) dcdiag output from the dc
e) ping from one of the client configured on mydomain.com == what is the output
f) please stop the dns and netlogon using net stop dns & net stop netlogong) after that delete / rename the following files netlogon.dns file h) start the netlogon service and then the dns check for the outputi) if the above resolution didnt work , please take a netmon /ethereal capture while you are performing ping and paste the output for analysis.

Hi Sainath1- no ping x is ping x I mean you can ping x and get a reply ping y and get a reply ping Rani and get a reply ... PingSainath and get a replyAnd now I'll give you what was the problemThe problem was with a setting in the Domain Nameregistered with the hosting company "Bad setting from my side", URL forwarding !!So the thing was like the following :1 - you ping xyz it goes to your dns, which doesn't find it.2 - It forward the request to the ISP "The ISP had heard about mydomain.com as my website is on it" ->hostingserver3 - Hostingserver will reply ! "Because of the URL forwarding"Tada !!!Rani Shoura
