Are you sure that you have a A record for servername.domain.com? Please go this server, make sure that it is using the internal DNS server as primary one. Once done, run ipconfig /registerdns to register its DNS A record. Don't forget that you should have a primary zone for domain.com on your DNS server. Also, check your connectivity and make sure that the client computer from which you run nslookup is using the internal DNS server as primary one. Try to ping the server to make sure that it is reachable. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights. Hello, is the server member server or DC? Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from it and also the existing DC/DNS servers. Do you use Reverse lookup zones? Are all machines registered in the DNS forward lookup zone with the A and Nameserver(if DNS server) record?Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

We did some testing and found the "disable recursion" setting was checked, we unchecked it and seems to work fine. I did some search on the "disable recursion" setting but can't really undernstand when it should be used - our DNS server is only hosting internal zones and doesn't need to access external lookup so any advise on what the correct setting should be. Many thanksMomo

Hi Momo, It is essential to use a valid internal DNS server as preferred one, if the queried name does not find a matched answer at its preferred server, the query process can continue, using recursion to fully resolve the name, this involves assistance from other DNS servers to help resolve the name, if DNS server has no "Forwarders" then it uses "Root Hints" to resolve the name. As you said, your DNS server is hosting internal zone only, so you certainly can disable recurison/forwarders to stop performing the recursive lookup from external. Dear Oloey, For solving this issue do the following things.. 1) Assign the DNS Server IP i the LAN Properties ( in this situation, Add the it own IP ass the DNS IP because in the same Server only you have configured the DNS ) 2) After that run ipconfig /registerdns command 3) Go to DNS Management and check the Resource record A and PTR of Server 4) Run the NSLOOKUP command Regards, Ravisankar K P MCITP, MCT , MCTS , MCSA
