Notifications of updates

Hi there,

Hope this is the correct place to post this question. If not any suggestions are welcome!

We use a Server2012R2 machine. With the older versions of Server I always got notifications in the systemtray when updates are downloaded and ready for installing.

In Server2012 I never get those messages and I haven't figured out yet where to get this information. My virusscanner alerts me, but I would like to manage updates from within Server2012 itself like I do with my older servers.

Any suggestions?

Go to Control Panel --> Windows Update --> Change settings

What is your setting for Important Updates?  If you have something like 'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them' selected, you should get a message when you log onto the computer that patches are waiting to be installed.

Also check your Control Panel --> Action Center --> Change Action Center settings.  You will see that you have the option to select a variety of different messages to be displayed.  If Windows Update is not checked, you won't see Windows Update messages.

Thanx for your answers Tim, appreciate it!

I do see (In a **flash**) some notification appearing  when starting up, but no Icon in the system tray.

I DO have 'Download updates but let me choose whether to install them' selected, but still no icon.

Ive found: Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings:

Updates...

In the Action Center panel I discovered Updates were grayed out

Action Center...

But Im further down the line now, taking a step at the time. Thanks again!

I'm not familiar with using the system tray - never used that.

But, if you download the updates and do not install them, eventually you will receive a banner across the middle of the screen that let's you know that updates are available.  You have the select to Install or Ignore.  But you get a warning that is much more visible than an icon in the system tray.

Hi,

As far as I know, this is by design in the new Operation System since Windows 8. In previous Windows versions such as Windows 7, if the option of Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them is selected, whenever there were new updates available, Windows Update will show its icon in Taskbar notification area (or system tray) to notify us about the new updates.

In the new Operation System, it will only show the notification about new updates on the logon screen and not the desktop. You will now see a small line in the bottom right corner of the logon screen. Something looks like this:
