Node type: Peer-Peer
Hi
I have just finished installing a W2K3 x64 Ent Ed on Vmware and noticed on IPConfig that the node type is Peer-Peer instead of the usual Hybrid.
Is there a way to change this and do I need to as in will it do any harm?
Thanks, Maelito

By default if you configure at least one WINS address the computer will use Hybrid. If no WINS setting then Broadcast should be the default. Peer-to-Peer and Mixed can only happen if you hard code the NodeType or configure the DhcpNodeType settings
here.
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters

The harm is only performance loss, and on home networks none of these settings matter...because you don't have a WINS server. On corporate LANs you should always use Hybrid (assumes you have a WINS server)....it reduces broadcasts, which are considered
bad on corporate LANS. If NO WINS Server, then disable Netbios all together.....P2P, Mixed, and Hybrid are useless then anyway.

Thanks for you all guys, your responses were really fast and useful.
By the way I had a WINS entry but made no difference.
As it goes, I have reset my WINS settings and IPCONFIG /all now reports node type as Hybrid.

We had a user who's PC coulld not see any other computer/device on our network. All TCPIP settings where correct (set up for DHCP). Noticed ipconfig /all showed Node Type: Peer to Peer instead of Hybrid. Resetting TCPIP and WINS settings to default did
not help. Following the registry edit instructions on here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314053 fixed the issue. Basically navigating to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
Then basically doing a search for "nodetype" and changed the Valid Range on all search results to "8" (it originally showed "2" which is the setting for peer to peer / 8 is setting for Hybrid). Thank you!
