Pricing also my concern. have to decide on a server soon. Open Source is a strong option nowadays. However any hope of a stablier platform than XP or vista from Microsoft would be really welcomed. Question is a Windows Server 2008 out of my reach? Five workstation and small business?

Depends on the money you want to spend. You can get a decent server with Server 2008 for a good proce from Dell. And you can consider the Apple X-Serve as a very valid option.David

Hyper-V Server is free: Coming next month, a virtualization server (sometimes called a host) that you can download for free (as in Beer). Watch the Hypre-V Server page for more news. Scenarios for Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 (notice that it is NOT called Windows Hyper-V Server) include: Test and Development Basic Server Consolidation Branch Office Consolidation Hosted Desktop Virtualization (VDI) Note that Hyper-V Server comes with no UI, just like running the Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2008 on a Serve Core installation. Among the things you DON'T get in Hyper-V Server: Hassle tying to activate from the command line - No Activation! Noclustering No Quick Migration No large memory support (large meaning >32GB) No multi-proc support > 4 proc on the host No ability to run any other workload/Windows Server 2008 role Read the system requirements for Hyper-V Server. For more info: Read the Hyper-V Server FAQ.tony soper

is windows server 2003 free? In some cases. If you are, like me, a student interested in IT, you can download a copy of Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 from Microsoft's Dreamspark website. Non students, however, will have to pay the full price, which usually doesn't dip below $200.

Question is a Windows Server 2008 out of my reach? Five workstation and small business? Windows Server 2003 works find for me, and is generally priced lower than 2008. I would recommend using a Windows Server over any other software because there is abundant support for Microsoft products.

Yeah "Microsoft Newsgroups -> Windows Server 2003 -> Forums -> General" brings us here, so it's not exactly clear where messages about server 03 should be posted.
