On 5/17/2011 Microsoft released a new version of the Asset Inventory Service (AIS 2.0).

Some of the key changes in this new version are:

·         Improved user interface built on Silverlight and localized into 11 languages

·         Title normalization and version aggregation in software reporting

·         Virtual machine and App-V package support in software and hardware reports

·         Improved Microsoft licensing reports

·         Better hardware reporting and the ability to view the hardware properties of a computer

If you were using the previous version of AIS (AIS1.5), you can now login to AIS 2.0 at https://manage.microsoft.com/ais with your current credentials and download the updated agent. The online docs AIS Online Help describe AIS in detail. However it is important to emphasize the following:  

·         AIS 2.0 requires a complete client redeployment

·         Log in to AIS 2.0, obtain the new client and plan the deployment

·         AIS 1.5 (the previous version of AIS) will be retired in Sept 2011

The Migrating to Asset Inventory Service 2.0 section of the Online Help provides more information regarding the migration from AIS 1.5 to AIS 2.0.
