Network Problem
Hi Guys,
I’m dealing with a cumbersome problem on our network. Here is the explanation:
We are using ‘Mdeamon’ as our mail server and outlook on client computers. There are about 140 users who are using outlook to check their emails. We have mapped a drive for each user on the network called ‘M’ which contains some of
the users’ files and specially ‘netmail’ (outlook pst) file(s). Some of the users have just one pst file on the network and some other have got 2-3. The average size of the pst file for each user is 2 GB, therefore, it’s decreasing
the network performance more and more.
I’m looking for a solution to solve this problem.
I also want a solution to be able to backup the PST files every day.
I would appreciate your attention about this issue.
Thanks and regards,
Bahman

1. outlook PST on network is not supported reasons are exctly what you are experiencing and also high chances of corruption.
2. If you are using windows xp or 7 , use local backup utility to take backup on to network drive.
3. Other option which is recommned is to use server side backing up ( mails should not be PST though).
4. if you have exchange 2010, archiving feature will have you a lot.

Hello,
using .pst files on network shares are not recommended, even not from Microsoft. Additional the
maximum recommended size is 2GB.

To backup data use the windows integrated ntbackup(2003) or Windows server backup(2008 and higher) on the server where the share belongs to and either backup the folder containing them or the volume as within Windows server backup no folders can be backed
up.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hi Bahman,
Thank you for your post.
We don't recommend that using network shares to store .pst files. It would not only increasing network traffic, but also a server hang or PagedPool depletion. The
issue will occur first thing in the morning - when users are logging on and launching Outlook.
Why are network stored PST files a bad idea?
