Network Neighbourhood/Network Discover
Hi, We just migrated our DCs from Windows 2003 to 2008 R2. We now discover that network neighbourhood is no longer populated with all machine names in our Windows 7 workstations. Is this because it has been replaced with Network Discovery? I notice on the new Windows 2008 R2 Servers that network discovery is turned off. Is this the default setting? Do I need to turn this on to allow machine names re-populate network neighbourhood? Does this need to be set on all workstations?Celtic

I'm confused now :-) Is it network discovery I need to turn on or the computer browser service or both?Celtic

the computer browser service does not have a long-term future. It is an NT legacy app which relies on Netbios over TCP/IP (Originally it used Netbeui, but it was modified to run with TCP/IP). Netbios is not supported in IPv6, so eventually the browser service will become obsolete. The replacement in IPv6 is Network Discovery. The computer browser service still works with WIn7/Server 2008 R2 for backward compatibility through IPv4.http://www.arabitpro.com

All the workstation's are Windows 7.. So if I just enable network discovery on the servers will this suffice to be able to see all servers/workstations in network neighbourhood?Celtic

We have windows xp sp3 workstations. We discovered that the browser service is not working for workstations on subnets where there is no dc located. Any ideas how to fix this?Celtic
