NetBIOS over TCP/IP for the Routing and Remote Access service in Windows server 2008 R2
How to disable Netbios over TCP/IP for the Routing and Remote Access service (Windows server 2008R2)? PPP adapter is always with NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled.
February 7th, 2012 5:24am

Add the DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry value for the Routing and Remote Access service The DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry value disables the NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) protocol for remote access connections. Therefore, the server will not register the PPP adaptor in the WINS database. Know that by adding this value, you will prevent remote access clients from browsing the local network through My Network Places or Network Neighborhood. Sometimes, it may also cause remote access connections to be unsuccessful on computers that are running older versions of Windows. For example, remote access connections may be unsuccessful on Microsoft Windows 98 computers and on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Workstation computers. For an alternative to using the DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry, see the "Workaround" section. Important If the server is running Windows 2000 Server SP2 or an earlier version, you must update the server with SP3 or SP4 for the DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry value to work. If you do not update the server, the Routing and Remote Access service will not use this registry value, and the issue will not be resolved. For additional information about how to obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000 Server, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 260910 How to obtain the latest Windows 2000 service pack Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RemoteAccess\Parameters\IP On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value to add the following registry value: Value name: DisableNetbiosOverTcpip Data type: REG_DWORD Value data: 1 Close Registry Editor, and then restart the Routing and Remote Access service. To restart a service, clickStart, point to Programs or All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services. In the Services console, right-click the service, and then click Restart. This is not working in Windows server 2008 R2.
February 7th, 2012 5:53am

Hi, Thank you for your post. The DisableNetbiosOverTcpip registry value works for Windows 2008 R2. It prevents VPN clients to register IP address in WINS server. As the KB292822 mentioned, another workaround way is to set up VPN addresses to static address pool. PPP adapter is always with NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled. The adapter show NetBIOS enabled is on client side and will be blocked on VPN server side. So it should verify NetBIOS function in VPN lan not client local lan. Hi, Is there a PPP connection in the "Network and Sharing Center" > "change adapter settings"? If so, just choose "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" in the "WINS" tab of the "Advanced" "IPv4" protocol settings. Hi, Per my testing, the results between my test 2003 and 2008 R2 RRAS are just the same as yours. The reg key doesn't work in 2008 R2, and before the DWORD DisableNetbiosOverTcpip is created in the 2003 server, the entry "NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : xxxx" of PPP in ipconfig/all doesn't exist. We suppose it means NetBIOS over Tcpip is enabled in this scenario. I am not sure if it is a by design behavior, since it is causing issue due to the WINS name registration, I would like to provide you with a workaround to manually add a NetBIOS record into the lmhost on specfic machines or via GP: Single machine: Create HOSTS and LMHOSTS Files to Prevent Spoofing Attacks <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179768.aspx> Via GP: The first task is to create a batch file and the second task is to deploy the batch file as a startup script using Group policy: How to create a batch file: 1. Open a notepad and type in the command Copy \servername\Share\LMHOSTS <file:///\\lcsdc\Share\LMHOSTS> C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc Please note that servername is the server name and the Share is the folder that contains the LMHOSTS file that needs to be pushed. You will have to mention the right server name and the shared folders name appropriately. Ensure that everyone has proper share and security permissions on the shared folder that contains the LMHOSTS file. 2. Save the notepad file as .bat file. This becomes a batch file. 3. This batch file is ready to be deployed using either Group policy. How to deploy the batch file using Group Policy: 1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers. 2. Right click the domain name and select properties. 3. Select the third tab named Group Policy. 4. Select the Default Domain Policy and click on Edit. 5. Expand Computer configuration and Windows settings. 6. Select Scripts (Startup/Shutdown). 7. Double click Startup on the right hand side. 8. Click on Show files . Copy the batch file to the path given ( for ex - The path looks like \\demo.com\sysvol\demo.com\Policies\{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}\machine\Scripts\Startup . This path will vary depending on your domain name) 9. Click on add and browse to the batch file. Click on OK. 10. Close the Group Policy Object Editor. 11. Click on OK again. You can reboot the client system or do a gpupdate /force to ensure that group policies get applied successfully. Not working. The problem is resolved, when manualy renew TCP/IPv4 on Local Area Connection {Network Connections/ Local Area Connection Properties/ Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties/ and press OK} after activation of PPP adapter. Then WINS server working correctly. But after restart need intervention. Regards!
