Need help with Windows server upgrade
Hi,
I have a bit of a sticky situation and was hoping one of you kind peopl emight be able to offer some advice. I have a customer who wants to move to 2008 r2 64 bit with Exchange 2010. I have done this migration before from 2003 Windows server to 2008 DC's
and Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. My issue here is that the customer has a Windows 2000 server acting as a DC with all FSMO roles and this server also runs Exchange 2003. My question was going to be.... is it possible to do an in place upgrade from Windows
2000 to Windows 2003 R2 IF the server is running Exchange 2003 and holds all the FSMO roles?
I couldnt find any info anywhere else so many thanks to any one who replies
thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
As Windows 2000 is a 32 bit OS and Windows 2008 R2 is 64 bit OS, an in-place upgrade is not possible.

Hi Mukesh,
Its specifically going from 2000 to 2003 rather than 2008. Basically I need to get to 2003 so I can raise the forest functional level to 2003 Native. That will enable me to put Exchange 2010 into the organisation. My issue is that it is a Windows 2000 DC
running Exchange 2003 and it needs to be upgraded to Windows 2003 running Exchange 2003. Once I am at that stage I can do the rest of the work to go to Exchange 2010 (I have new virtual machines waiting to be used for this purpose).
thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
It is possible to upgrade your existing Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003, it is straight forward.
1. Run ADPREP to update the schema.
2. Upgrade the OS to Windows 2003.
3. Raise the functional level to Windows 2003.
