Need help connecting to sql server using Report Builder 3.0

Retired hobby coder needing help yet again.  I graduated college with a degree in economics Summa Cum Laude, but I gotta tell you, the Microsoft "family" of product and their usage totally bafflesme.

I purchase SQL Server 2014 and use Sequel Server Management Studio to access it.  Wanting to learn reporting I downloaded Microsoft Report Builder 3.0 and find myself unable to figure out how to connect to the SQL Server.

I would like to connect to this database.

Whenever I run the connection wizard I can't find even a sniff of the server in the above.

I'm sure it's all somewhere in the concisely written, ever logical and clear documentation...but I'm unable to find it.  Can someone please point me in the correct direction?

Minuend

Hello,

Report Builder 3.0 was intended for SQL Server 2008 R2. Try using the following version of the tool.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I uninstalled existing version and downloaded and installed Report Builder 3 for SQL Server 2014. Unfortunately I'm having the same problem.

The wizard setup looks a little different but leads to the same bad, no sql server identified place.

Whenever I try to 'Build' the connection string I get this:

Note it says its for sql svr 2000 or 2005.  The Azure selection has the same note.  I clicked on the Sql Svr Analysis Server selection and it, too is blank.

Hi

Your heading in the right direction, in the text block that says server name, put int he value HP_1\MSSQLSERVERDEV

This is the instance name of you database server. The data source would be SQL server.

Hi Minuend,

According to your description, when creating data source, you cannot see the servername, right?

In Report Builder, when creating data source, we can select the servername to connect the local database or remote database. In your scenario, if the computer is not in the domain, you cannot see other doamin users servername. For you reqirement, you want to connect the local database, you can type . or localhost in the serveranme text box, and then select the database which you want to connect.

If you have any other question, please feel free to ask.

Thanks for you help.  I followed your lead and was able to connect to an older server, but I still can't find the sql server 2014 Db to which I want to connect.

This shows building the connection to the older server.

Again, I think it's looking for sql 2000 or 2005 because when I go to the Builder that's the only choices I see.

The question for me is how to I get it to Build using a 2014 Server?

Thanks for your help.  Min

Perhaps there's a better approach.  Isn't there supposed to be a Report capability built into SQL SERVER 2014?

I have the report server set up.  How does one execute that reporting capability?  I believe it's called Reporting Services (SSRS).

Thanks, Minuend

Hi Minuend,

Based on your description, you have two SQL Server instances in you computer. Now, the old server is the default instance, so when typing the ".", it will connect to the old server. You can type in the server name to connect the required server.

If it doesn't work, you can open SQL Server Configuration Manager, and then select the required SQL Server instance. Select Protocols for MSSQLSERVER and Right-click the TCP/IP. Then you can see the IP information. When creating Data source, you can directly type in the IP to connect to the required server.
