NTFS Performance and large number of files
Hello All - If we extract large number of files on a volume/folder on a ntfs file system? what would be the impact on performance? is there a limit of how many files that can be extracted? or how many files can be stored within a folder? Thanks in Advance.GYIPT

The NTFS limits are described in the NTFS Technical Reference at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938937.aspx There isn't a limit on the number of files *per folder* on a volume. However, if you consider the root of the volume to be a folder, then this limit will apply to the root folder itself for improving NTFS performance at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c13621675.mspx. This was written for XP but also applies to W2K3. Scroll down to the section titled "Optimizing NTFS Performance.". I beleive its the same on windows 2008 as well. http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin
