Moving SCOM Operations Manager DB, DW DB and Reporting DB from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012 Server

Hi.

We are looking at moving our SCOM 2007 R2 Databases from a single SQL 2005 server to an instance on a SQL 2012 server.

I just wondered if this going to be possible. I can see there is a process as per below

linkhttps://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540384.aspx

but was hoping going from an non instance to an instance on a clustered SQL server will not cause any issues and of course moving up 2 editions of SQL server as well.

Thanks

Hi,

There is no support for SQL2012 in SCOM2007R2

Operations Manager 2007 R2 Supported Configurations

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb309428.aspx

"SQL Server 2005 Standard or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP1, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP3, or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition SP4, or SQL Server 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2008 SP2, SQL Server 2008 R2, or SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1. For Operations Manager 2007 R2 with CU5 applied, SQL Server 2008 SP3 is supported. For Operations Manager 2007 R2 with Cumulative Update 7 applied, SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 is supported."

I did a DR test and restored our SCOM 2007 R2 CU6 DB's from SQL 2008 SP1 to SQL 2012 SP1.  No problems from what I can see.  I backed up all the DB's, copied them over, restored.  Hacked all the management servers to point to the new SQL instance.

Test in a lab, I suspect it will work just fine.

1) SCOM 2007 R2 does not supports SQL 2012 and it is highly recommend that you does not move your live SCOM DB from SQL 2005 to SQL 2012.
2) Procedure on moving DB from one server into another server, you may refer to the following link
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540384.aspx
3) Although Blake has successfully testing SCOM 2007 R2 DB restoration from SQL 2008 to SQL 2012. It is not advisable for moving SCOM 2007 R2 DB into SQL 2012, is not official support on SCOM 2007 R2.

Thanks very much for all your responses - this was really helpful. We may try this in a lab scenario first then :-)

So let me take back what I said before.  I was able to DR to SQL 2012, and everything BUT report server role was working.

So if you move your SQL back end to SQL 2012, it "may" work.  But you would have to keep SRS on SQL 2008.

SQL 2012 SRS does not work with SCOM 2007 R2 report server role.  I tried every way from Sunday and I couldn't get it to work.  Eventually I just removed SQL 2012 and used SQL 2008 SP2.

Oh well.. Live and you learn.
