Move User Shares and Retain Share/NTFS Permissions Server 2003
Hello, I have a shared folder on partition F of a Windows Server 2003 machine. What I need to do is move this shared folder and all its subfolders and files to partition E of the same server, while retaining all NTFS and share permissions. I've been looking at Xcopy for this, but not sure it's the best option. I see mention of Robocopy, but I know it's not inherent to Server 2003. Is Robocopy something I could download for use on Server 2003, and would it accomplish the objective here? Thanks in advance for any tips or advice.

try using robocopy which comes with the resource kit windows 2003 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=9d467a69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en http://www.virmansec.com/blogs/skhairuddin

another option is Beyond Compare. If you want a GUI that may be something to look at. It has a 30day trial. http://www.scootersoftware.com/

You can use the Xcopy command with the /O/X/E/H/K switches to copy the files and retain the existing permissions that have been specifically applied to the file or files. For more info, please follow: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323007
