Move KMS to a new server
Hello,
our old KMS is installed on a DC with Windows Server 2008. Now I installed a new KMS host with Windows Server 2008 R2.
The server is activated. I saw the article:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaactivation/thread/cd4177bd-8df5-4a66-afdc-c760398b7e7f
If I follow it, do I also need again 25 clients to connect to the new KMS, or is it working directly, but at the moment I have the error message:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer could not be activated. The count reported by your Key Management Service (KMS) is insufficient. Please contact your system administrator.
I couldn't use the same setup key because of Windows Server 2008 R2.
and slmgr -dli shows a current count of 14. Now also some servers, which were already activated shows this error.
Is there a possibility to increase it. I also tried to activate existing servers and for some it is working. All some existing and all new (Windows 2008 and Windows 7) have problems.
Thanks in advance
Dirk

Hi,
Have you configured a new SRV record to point your new
KMS server?

Hi,
Or you can re-install the KMS client keys by manually Specifying the KMS Host:
slmgr.vbs /skms <value>:<port>
Where value is either the KMS_FQDN, IPv4Address, or NetbiosName of the KMS host and port is TCP port on the KMS host.

Hello ,
Either way will work.
If you specify the KMS host using skms, the client will not be using DNS to locate the KMS host any longer. To use a different KMS host later you will have to clear that entry or specify a new host.
With DNS entries if it cannot find the first KMS host, it will fall back to second entry in the list.
Specifying is fine, just be aware of the behavior. Thanks, Darrell Gorter This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hello,
I created a new DNS Record and removed the old one.
Then I copied the saved list in VAMT to the new server and clicked on all clients and did a KMS activation. Some were successfull, some reported the error and new clients are not working.
I checked now more then 25 Windows Server 2008 servers registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SL\KeyManagementServiceName
and on Windows 7 machines: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform\KeyManagementServiceName
And Port is always: 1688
And they are pointing to the new server.
And I also started the command: slmgr -skms kms.domain.com:1688
But still only 14 clients.
