Migration from Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition to windows 2008 Standard Edition Server
Hi!
My Network Environment has as bellow
- A Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition X86 for Domain Controller.
- A Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition X64 for Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server.
- Over 100 Users both Windows XP and Windows 7 Client.
And now i want to migration my Network Environment as bellow:
- A Windows 2008 Standard Edition X86 for Domain Controller.
- A Windows 2008 Standard Edition X64 for Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server. (Can we use Windows 2008 SE x86 for Exchange 2007?)
- Over 100 Users both Windows XP and Windows 7 Client.
My question is, How can I migration from W2k3 to W2k8? and what are they effective with my Network Environment?

Hello,
for AD, you have to upgrade to AD DS 2008: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731188(WS.10).aspx
How many DCs do you have?
If it is just one DC then you can proceed using one of the following:
Perform an in-place upgrade of your DC to 2008: Perform a backup of your DC before proceeding
Add an additional DC and make it a DNS and GC server. Once done, check that AD replication was done without problems, transfer FSMO roles and demote the old DC (recommended)
If you have multiple DCs then make sure that you have at least one DC / DNS / GC server and transfer FSMO roles to it, demote all other DCs, re-install their OS and promote it again. Continue like that untill you upgrade all DCs.
For Exchange, please ask them in Exchange forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserver
Note that it is recommended to have at least two DC / DNS / GC servers per domain.

I cannot see the most important information. Are you migrating old operating system to the new one on the same hardware, or you are migrating to new hardware. If you have new hardware, then you should use 32 bit version of adprep (see the Technet on the
procedure for forest, domain and group policy) add W2K8 to the domain, make it domain controller and move the FSMO roles and replicate GC. Do not continue with Exchange migration, until the system is fully replicated and logs without error. Then you follow
advise from Exchange forum, how to optimally migrate Exchange server. You should have advice on the Exchange prior to the any migration step.

In addition,
After completing the forestprep check the schema version and wait for the completeing the replication and then run the domainprep.
How to check the schema version?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/556086
Schema version for new operation system
Find the Schema version for the operating systems
13 - Windows 2000 Server
30 - Windows Server 2003 RTM, Windows 2003 With Service Pack 1, Windows 2003 With Service Pack 2
31 -Windows Server 2003 R2
44 - Windows Server 2008 RTM
47 - Windows Server 2008 R2
________________________________
Take the system state backup of your schema master then disable the outbound replication and run the forestprep.
Repadmin /options <dc-fqdn> +DISABLE_OUTBOUND_REPL
After getting the success log enable the out bound replication via repadmin.
Repadmin /options <dc-fqdn> -DISABLE_OUTBOUND_REPL
Wait for competing the replication.
>
Using the copied folder on each DC run the following commands in the order specified in the following table.
Use adprep32 since the OS on the DC is assumed to be 32bit.
Command
Permission
Domain Controller
Runtime
adprep /forestprep
Schema and Enterprise Admin
Schema Master
3-5 mins
adprep /rodcprep
Schema and Enterprise Admin
Domain Naming Master
Seconds
adprep /domainprep /gpprep
Domain Admin
Infrastructure Master
Seconds
> Check the following log file on each DC to verify there were no errors.
%SystemRoot%\Debug\adprep\logs\yyyymmddhhmmss\adprep.log
> If you run adprep multiple times on a DC then a new log is created for
each run.

Hello,
Windows server 2008 will act the same as Windows server 2008 until the functional levels are raised, then new options are available. You have some more GUI options in Windows server 2008, for example an AttibuteEditor tab on the user/machine account properties
and the new AD AC for example.
