Migrate from 2000 AD to Win2k8 AD
Is it possible to perform a merge upgrade from a 2000 domain to 2008? I would be installing the win28 servers on new machines, promoting them to DC's transferring the roles and decomissioning the older w2k servers. I know its a supported upgrade path from 2003 to 2008 but wanted to ensure it was possible from 2000 to 2008 without having to first upgarde the domain to 2003.Thanks

Here is what you need to do. install Windows 2008 x64 to x64 hardware apply schema update to Windows 2003 AD join to Windows 2000/2003 domain promote Windows 2008 x64 to DC ensure replication has completed move FSMO roles decommission Windows 2000/2003 DCs There is a schema update required before you can add a Windows 2008 DC to a Windows 2003 or 2000 domain. http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/1d502209-cdb9-4e13-9a6c-57ad6c9d1e8b1033.mspx?mfr=true Here is the starting point forassistance in upgradingAD - http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/1d502209-cdb9-4e13-9a6c-57ad6c9d1e8b1033.mspx?mfr=true tgc

Oh yes, you really don't have to move to 64-bit hardware, but since that capability is there for almost all servers, and this is the last release of a 32-bit server OS from Microsoft, it just makes sense to make the change when you are already changing. tgc

Hi, Up to now, only Windows Server 2003 can be directly upgraded into Windows Server 2008. A upgrade to Windows Server 2003 first is necessary. Supported upgrade paths can be seen in the article below: Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/f1713937-0b3f-4b0d-9d31-410598278f6e1033.mspx?mfr=true Upgrading from Windows Server 2003 http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/why-upgrade-2003.aspx Hope this helps.

Interesting word: Up to now Does this mean, in the near future this will be possible, without the need first to upgrade to Windows Server 2003 ? _____________________________Tarek Majdalani Computer Engineer, CIW, MCSA: Security 2000/2003, TS: Windows Vista MVP -- ISA Firewalls Website : http://www.elmajdal.net/Win2k8

This is a somewhat confusing statement. Just for clarification sake are you saying it is not possible to introduce a 2008 member server into a windows 2000 native mode domain, promote it to a dc, move all necessary master roles to this 2008 dc and decommission the older 2000 domain controllers? I was the under the impression this was possible with a 2000 native domain or above.Keep in mind I am not talking about an in-place windows upgrade where windows 2008 is installed over top of a 2003 server (which I know is not supported on a 2000 server). I am talking about introducing a fresh 2008 install into the existing 2000 domain, promoting it, transferring all roles to it and decommissioning the old 2000 dc's.Thanks Miles Li MSFT wrote: Hi, Up to now, only Windows Server 2003 can be directly upgraded into Windows Server 2008.
