Migrate CALs from 2003 to 2008 r2
Greetings!
I'm reading:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/03/06/migrating-a-windows-server-2003-license-server.aspx
Scenario in our company:
Old 2003 DC who is licensing server will be shutdown (read: formatted) soon. He has a role of being licensing server and has some 2000 and some 2003 CALs. The idea was/is to make our new 2008 R2 DC new licensing server.
Following URL which I have mentioned at beging of this post, I was able to deactivate old License server (with MS telephone support) and able to active licensing server on 2008 r2. Now I'm stucked with export/import cals from old 2003 server to 2008 r2 server.
The MS technican support did not had the knowledge how to do that. I also don't believe that we d ont have 2000 and 2003 CAL license physical on a paper anywhere and the only place they are is that 2003 old server, soo how can we move them from 2003 server
to new 2008 r2 licensing server?

If you have an invoice that confirms the original CAL and TS licenses and updated ones, then ask the local Microsoft representative for new licenses and install vanilla plain new system. If MS support has no help for failing migration, then I can see no
other way, how to do it.

If you have Windows Server 2003 TS CALs you will need to buy new RDS 2008 CALs.
For licensing questions, I suggest contacting Microsoft Licensing Center for detailed explanation.
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/contact-us.aspx
please call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist.
Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact information in their locations.
Thanks

The idea is to migrate 2003 cals to this 2008 server.
We also have 2008 cals which we will input on this license server, but probably we still need thoose 2003 CALs from previous server, cause we have a terminal server 2003 and 2000 in our environment.bostjanc

Greetings!
Sorry for making your reply as unanswered. Let me describe our scenario a little bit more.
In our company we have this servers:
-SERVER NUMBER 1
2003 SERVER .... Our previous Domain Controller Server who is going to be shutdown (read: formatted). This server holded "Licensing server role". This Server has some 2000 TS CAL's and some 2003 CAL'
-SERVER NUMBER 2
2000 Terminal SERVER
-SERVER NUMBER 3
2003 Terminal SERVER
-SERVER NUMBER 4
Windows 2008 R2 server .... a new Domain Controller server ...
The idea:
1. Migrate Licensing server role from 1st server (2003) to 4th server (2008r2).
2. -Migrate 2000, 2003 CAL'S from 1st server to 4th server ... because SERVER NUMBER 2,3 are still "very-much-alive" in our company.
3. We have already bought (but never used) CALS for 2008 servers. I have papers where its written:
*(4 papers with different "numbers") client access license for Microsoft Windows terminal server 2008 User/Device licenses
* (1 paper) Microsoft Windows Essential business server 2008 client access license Device/user licenses.
We will probably input this "serial-numbers for cal" to activate them on new licensing server.
With MS technical support we have sucessfully deactivated the old licensing server (SERVER 1) and activated licensing server (SERVER 4).
Now we are stucked at number 2... where we need to export those cals and export them to 2008 server, because we do not want users have problem connecting to SERVER2 & SERVER 3.
Please help!bostjanc

If you want to transfer your 2000, 2003 TS CALs to a 2008 R2 RD Licensing server you may need to contact the Microsoft Clearinghouse, explain to them you are moving the license to a new server, and then they will allow you to install the TS CALs on the
new server. After you do this make sure you reconfigure your 2003 TS so that it looks to your 2008 R2 RD Licensing server using Terminal Services Configuration (tscc.msc) as well as deactivate/uninstall your old TS Licensing service.
It is better to use
RDS/TS Fourm.
