Working on a W7/64 machine, I have tried date/time update (was 2 min out of synch, now working), then your steps 1 (not applicable, no proxy), 2 BITS and WindowsUpdate (formerly AU, I'm guessing), 3 (added to Trusted, Medium security), and 4 (not possible: wupdinfo.dll not found in W7/64?). The windowsupdate.log reports error 80248105. HP on-line help came up with nothing beyond this.

The only real difference is that I am using Windows 8... Not sure if that makes a difference or what. I included a screenshot below and I also found a reference to this error report, in case it helps: Report.wer (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\NonCritical_7.8.8250.0_...etc [truncated]) Version=1 EventType=WindowsUpdateFailure2 EventTime=129858013509508579 Consent=1 UploadTime=129858013510048611 ReportIdentifier=1c2159aa-c520-11e1-a157-00044b181e2a Response.BucketId=230764b75c3b19067d4c0be85ca6c9c7 Response.BucketTable=5 Response.LegacyBucketId=-1504083889 Response.type=4 Sig[0].Name=ClientVersion Sig[0].Value=7.8.8250.0 Sig[1].Name=Win32HResult Sig[1].Value=80248015 Sig[2].Name=UpdateId Sig[2].Value=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 Sig[3].Name=Scenario Sig[3].Value=Scan Sig[4].Name=SourceId Sig[4].Value=101 Sig[5].Name=Environment Sig[5].Value=Unmanaged Sig[6].Name=LastError Sig[6].Value=0 DynamicSig[1].Name=OS Version DynamicSig[1].Value=6.2.8250.2.0.0.256.74 DynamicSig[2].Name=Locale ID DynamicSig[2].Value=1033 State[0].Key=Transport.DoneStage1 State[0].Value=1 FriendlyEventName=Windows Update installation problem ConsentKey=WindowsUpdateFailure2 AppName=Host Process for Windows Services AppPath=C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe ReportDescription=A Windows update did not install properly. Hi, Anyone have any additional info on this issue? I've tried several things without luck. I tried :SFC/scannow and took a look at the CBS.log. Not sure how to make use of it though. I can post it if anyone thinks it is safe to do and may help. I read that Win8 comes pre-indoctrinated with antimalware (and thus does not allow the installation of my go to antivirus, Security Essentials). This problems seems tenacious, and I am starting to wonder if I may be infected with some sort of malware. Any help at all would be very appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!
