Microsoft Update problems
I'm running two Server 2003 Enterprise R2 with SP2 (build 3790.srv03_sp2_gdr.090319-1204) machines configured in a fail over cluster. Since the July or August update, I now receive an odd prompt when installing updates from http://update.microsoft.com. The files download successfully but when each update starts to install I receive a Windows Firewall Prompt titled "Windows Security Alert" with the text "Do you want to keep blocking this program; Name: Windows Service Pack Setup, Publisher: Microsoft Corporation" followed by by the "Keep Blocking", "Unblock", "Ask Me Later" button. No matter which button I click, the update then takes 10 minutes to install. The next update follows the same pattern and so on and so forth. I've been running this server for a year or two now and have never had any problems until I tried to install the August updates. So I believe either something in the July 2009 updates or one of the August 2009 updates changed something. I've tried, without success, emptying the c:\windows\system32\softwaredistribution folder and letting it repopulate. Still no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hi, You can try methods below to test the result: 1. Reset Internet Explorer. 2. Uninstall Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration. 3. Add the following sites to Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer: http://download.windowsupdate.com https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://*.update.microsoft.com http://*.download.windowsupdate.com http://update.microsoft.com 4. Disable your firewalls or anti-virus programs. Hope it helps. Tim Quan - MSFT

Hi, Please try Clean Boot now: Clean boot ================= Lets disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment, if the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
