Memory values in Task Manager do not add up
Server 2008 SP2 in a VMware vm. My memory shows the following: Total: 4095 Cached: 1036 Available: 2098 Free: 1116 Commit (MB) 2099/8189 According to this, the system is using 1036 for itself and there's 3214 free (2098 + 1116). But the memory usage is showing 50% utilization. Available and free should only add up to 2 GB. The commit is showing very little swapping, as it should be because there's lots of memory. Can somebody make sense of these numbers so that adding them up comes to the total physical memory. Thanks, Rudi

Hi, On Windows Server 2008, all the memory is divided into pages, and each page is 4KB. All the pages are sorted into different page-list according to its status. There are 9 different page-list types on windows 2008: =========================== Zeroed: Free: Standby: Modified: ModifiedNoWrite: Active/Valid: Transition: Bad: Unknown: ============================ · The Physical Memory (MB): Free in taskmgr means: Zeroed page list Bytes + Free page list Bytes. · The Physical Memory (MB): Cached in taskmgr means: Cache Bytes + Modified Page List Bytes + Standby Cache Reserve Bytes + Standby Cache Normal Priority Bytes + Standby Cache Code Bytes · The Physical Memory (MB): Available in taskmgr means: Standby page List Bytes + : Zeroed page list Bytes + Free page list Bytes They just show the combination of different page list. To calculate the real available memory, please subtract usage value shown in Memory graph from Physical Memory (MB): Total For more information, you can refer to the following article: Memory Performance Information http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa965225(VS.85).aspx This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
