Mapped Network Drives not working
Not sure where to post this because I am not sure where the issue is. Some of our users are not getting their network drives. Here is the breakdown. Clients are running Windows XP SP2. We have 2 windows 2003 r2 servers and one windows 2008 server on main campus. We have 1 windows 2003 r2 server at each of our 3 remote sites. Everyone gets a network drive using Active Directory under the profile tab under home network. Sometimes a user will login and get their network drive. They logoff and log back in and they won't get it. Log off or reboot and log back in and it will give it to them but won't let them access it. It says that they don't have permission. I have a share setup with Everyone full control on the share. Then I have individaul folders under the share with each person having control of their folder and no access to other folders. It works sometimes but not all times. There does not seem to be a reason or a pattern of when it will work or not work. DHCP is running on one of the Windows 2003 servers and DNS is running on all servers. I am not seeing anything in event logs on any server or the client when it happens. When it happens I can ping by name so it resolves ok. I check the logon server and sometimes it is a windows 2003 server and sometimes it is the 2008 server. Anyone have any thoughts? DCdiag and NetDiag runs fine on all servers.Joe M

Hi Joe, Are you able to reproduce this consistently in that you won't get the network drive the first time, but if you log off and back on you can? A couple of things to try: * Try adding a hosts entry for the server on the workstations having a problem * Try to grab a network trace to see if anything odd is going on there * Are Jumbo frames enabled on the NICs? I had a really odd problem recently where two servers would have about a 10 second pause before they could bring up shares on each others system. After lots of troubleshooting (and falsely thinking it was a DNS issue), I found that it was the NIC had Jumbo Frames enabled. As soon as I disabled it, the servers behaved as expected. m

Hello Joe, Thank you for posting here. From your description, it seems that issue is: the domain user cannot access its network drive home folder sometimes when he logoff and logon. To analyze the issue, please collect the following information: 1. What the form did you specify the home network? Did you set it in the form of IP address on target share or servername of target share? Please take screenshot of the profile tab. 2. Can you please check the network drive settings of the user home folder exist on all the domain controllers (windows Server 2003 & Windows Server 2008) in your domain? 3. When you logoff and logon again, can you access the network drive? If not, what is the detailed error message you can see? Can you please give us more information? Or you may take screenshot of the error message. 4. Did the network driver disappear when the client reboot? 5. Where does the target share of user home folders reside on? Please run "ipconfig /all > C:\shareip.txt" on the host server and the problematic client to dump the network settings. 6. For test purpose and narrow down the cause of the issue, please temporarily grant the target share with both share and NTFS full control permission, and then test to see if the issue will re-appear. Please note: You may send the shareip.txt and screenshots to us via tfwst@microsoft.com for the reference. I appreciate your time and efforts. Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Thanks for your reply. I tried adding all our servers to the host file and the same thing occurs. IT will work for maybe once, maybe twice, maybe 5 times and then not. I am going to mirror the port and grab network traffic. Also, I checked and I don't even see a Jumbo frames setting on these NICs so I don't think they are enabled. I am going to look out at the NICs website to see.ThanksJoe M

Thanks for your response. I emailed the requested files along with userenv.log but I wanted to post here to maybe help others as well. We were using DFS names for the shares when we first had problems. So we changed it UNC paths and we are still having issues. I even tried using the servers IP address and I get the same result. I confirmed that the home directory path is set for the user on every domain controller in the domain. The path is just pointing to a share on a Windows 2003 SP2 file server. I can usually access the network drive atleast once after a reboot. The problem seems to be more of when you log off and then log back in but not always. I then tried to giving the user full control of everything and I still get the same problem. I did send the userenv.log file to you but I am going to post here in hopes that someone else sees something. I see an error concerning no DNS name.ThanksJoe M

Hi Joe, Based on the research on the logs and screenshot, we found that you can mapped the network drive. Please perform the test to see if the issue will be re-occure. 1. On the problematic workstation locally, please try manually mapping the network drive to the file server share. Steps: a. Open "My Computer" b. Click on "Tools" and then select "Map Network Driver" c. input the \\ipaddressofserver\shareddriver and assign a drive letter (for example: Z: ) for it. d. Check "Reconnect at logon" e. Drive gets mapped f. Double click on the network drive to check if you can access it. g. Logoff and then logon with the same user account and see if the issue still exists. 2. The issue occurs even if you have granted Full control permission, as this issue does not always occur, I suspect there is something related to the NIC on the client computer. For test purpose, please replace the older NIC on the problematic computer with a 100Mbps NIC to test if the issue will be disappear. Hope it helps. ok...tried to map a network drive and it gives an error and says access denied. But when you are on the map network drive screen, you can type in part of the name such as \\10.0.40.84\student_drives and hit the browse button, browse to your folder and select it and it maps. But even if you have it checked to reconnect at next logon, it gives you an error when you log back on saying it could not find the drive and does not map it. As for the NIC, I tried another NIC and it does the same thing. I probably didn't make my first post clear enough. This is happening on around 500 client computers. Each is less than 3 years old with updated drivers. Some Gateway and some are HP. Some have Intel cards and some have Broadcom and some have a mix of other brands. That is what makes this soe frustrating. It doesn't follow a pattern that we can see and it seems random. Like yesterday in my tests, I logged in 30 times with the same account and everything was great. Log in with another account and no network drive. Thanks....Joe M

Hello all,I'm having a similar problem.I have a single Windows 2008 Server Std working as a DC (it provides DHCP, DNS, Login, Home drive folder, and it has a Server/Client Typing tutor software). (The hardware is an older Compaq server ML530 with dual 1 Ghz CPUs and 3.2 Gb RAM)I only have 20 identical PCs (HP 2.0 Ghz CPU and 512 MB memory) running Windows XP in a student lab setting. The PCs have Symantec AV, Microsoft Office 2003 and the Typing Tutor Client. The Server 2008 install was successful with no hicups. I connected it to the internet and allowed it to install all the available patches then it was taken off the internet. The lab can function sometimes for 3 day with no issues, but it can have issues twice in the same day.Symptoms: Senario 1: Themorning classcan login fine and work on Word, Excel andTyping Tutorwith no problems. The afternoon class login is slugish and after a longer than usual login wait time they get their desktop, but they can't get to their H drive (share home folder). If I reboot the server and have them log off and on everything goes back to normal.Senario 2: The morning class has issues loging in and after they finally get their desktop their H drive is not accessible ("The Login Issue").I reboot the server and have them logoff and on and they work fine. The afternoon class has no issues.Senario 3: The morning class has "The Login Issue". I reboot the server everything is fine. The afternoon class has "The Login Issue". I reboot server everything is fine.Senario 4: The morning and afternoon are fine for about3 days and then any of the other senarios may present itself.Senario 5: Senario 3 happens constantly for a few days and then any of the other senarios may present itself.I have tried removing the Typing Tutor Client/Server software from the server and there is no effects on the symptoms.I can ping the server from the client PC's. Ican even remote into the Server fromthe client PC and work with it with no problem.I can login to the server locally with no problem. The server logs don'treport any type of issues. What I'm about to test next is to remove the DNS service since its only a LAN andthis may be an unnecesary addon. But I don't think this is the problem.Any recommendations, comments, suggestions, tips or theories are truly welcomed!Ren

Hi Joe, I built a test environment like on my side, and failed to reproduce the issue on Windows XP SP3 client. For a test purpose, I suggest you find a Windows XP SP2 problematic client to apply Service pack 3 on it, and test to see if the issue of network drive can be fixed. How to obtain the latest Windows XP service pack http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389/ If it still exists, we may need to collect the security settings of the target folder (student_drives) on 10.0.40.86. 1. Get the XCACLS tool from Windows Server 2003 support tools. 2. Run "xcacls <path of the problematic folder> >>c:\ACL.txt" 3. Then collect the ACL.txt and send to me. Thank you. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
