MS Server 2008 SP2, windows update just stopped working
Afternoon all, I've read till I'm cross eyed today. Most of the results I've seen have applied to Vista or Win7, I've tried everything, I can get to the internet and Microsoft's web site and the Windowsupdate site, I've checked the firewall and all the DNS settings, I searched the registry but don't see the windowsupdate key that some people are talking about... Has anyone had a 2008 server just stop being able to run updates?? thanks, RJ

Hello, without any error message it isn't that easy to help you. How exactlly does it stop? If you run check for updates now which result/error code is shown?Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Could be a connection error, do you have an outbound firewall configured? Can you paste any interesting sections of the log file at %systemdrive%\windows\windowsupdate.log? # as an HRESULT: Severity: FAILURE (1), Facility: 0x7, Code 0x2efd # for hex 0x2efd / decimal 12029 : ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT inetmsg.h ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT wininet.h -- Mike Burr

Hi, Please try the following suggestions to troubleshoot this issue: Suggestion 1: Disable firewalls or other Internet browser programs that can affect the Internet connection ========================================================== The following programs can affect the connection to the Windows Update site and I suggest we remove or disable them: Download Accelerator GetRight Browser Blaster BitTorrent eMule Sygate Personal Firewall Norton Internet Security Freedom Firewall Zone Alarm Firewall If you have any other similar programs such as a pop-up blocker, please also temporarily remove or disable it to test the issue. Please understand that we are disabling these programs only for the purpose of troubleshooting and we can re-enable these programs after we finish troubleshooting. Note: Please understand that Windows Firewall is on by default and is used to protect the system when the third party security programs were turned off or removed. Suggestion 2 Reset proxy (for LAN connection) ============================== Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the proxy cache. 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. In the Tools menu, select Internet Options. 3. Click on the Connections tab. 4. Click on the LAN Settings. 5. Clear the entries in "Use automatic configuration script" and uncheck "Automatically detect settings." 6. Click on the Advanced button. 7. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section, 8. Click OK, and return to the previous window. Uncheck "Use Proxy Server for your LAN", and click OK to accept the changes. 9. Quit Internet Explorer. Next, clear your proxy cache. Suggestion 3 Reset Proxy Cache ============== 1. Click the Start Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". 2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 3. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter. Suggestion 4 Rename the Hosts file ===================== The Hosts file is used for host name resolution. If this file has been modified, we cannot access the Windows Update site properly and can receive the error code. 1. Click Start, type "%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc" (Without the quotation) and then press Enter. 2. Right-click on the file "Hosts" (without quotations) and choose Rename 3. Rename the file to "hostsold" (without quotations) 4. Then, clear the DNS (Domain Name Resolution) cache: 1). Click Start, type "cmd" (Without the quotation) and press Enter. 2). In the opened window, type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (Without quotations) and press Enter. Note: The Hosts file will be generated automatically after being removed. Good morning Tim, I've tried all of these suggestions with no success, this is a freshly loaded MS server with only SQL installed, there are no third party apps of any kind. The firewall is in the default state, I even tried shutting it off to see if it was something with the firewall no luck and then turned it back on.. I've done the reset proxy and flush DNS checked the DNS setting just to make sure I didn't typo something, did the host file thing. But it was working, I did all the updates on the server around 6/5 and it all ran fine after I installed SP2 and SQL SPs.. Gave it to the DBA and Wham.... now it won't update.. I blame the DBA obviously because we all know MS server would never do this just on it's own.... :) anything else you can think of please let me know.. thanks, RJ

Hi, Thank you for the reply. Let’s disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment. If the issue persists, please let me know whether you are using WSUS to install updates. Good morning Tim, I'd already done that, but I tried it again, the only things running on this machine is the HP PSP components, it is an HP blade server, I'd forgotten about them I don't consider them third party becuase they have to be there to make the blade center capabilities work.. Ok I disabled all of the items you said here tried it again and still no luck, same error is displayed. We are currenly not using WSUS in our enviroment.. RJ

Hi RJ, Can you tell us if there is NIC Teaming enabled on this server? You mention that there isnt anything 3rd party installed, is that the case for Anti-Virus as well? If there is AV installed make sure that it's disabled - sometimes it requires a reboot to unload the kernel mode filter driver. Please try stopping the wuauserv service, rename SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old, the restart wuauserv and run wuauclt /detectnow to determine if there may be some corruption in the AU cache. I'd like for you to gather some additional data from this machine if possible - can you run through the following steps? Open a cmd prompt as 'Administrator' Create a folder name c:\temp Run the following cmd and then reboot netsh winhttp set tracing trace-file-prefix="c:\temp\winhttp" level=verbose format=ansi max-trace-file-size=512000 state=enabled Visit the Windows Update Site and check the winhttp logs for the error. Due to the complexity of your question this falls into the paid support category which requires a more in-depth level of support.
