MSDN license versus retail license..
If we currently or plan to use an MSDN OS license for 2008 server Enteprirse, but later want to make that machinea production server, is it possible to just purchase a retail license and somehow "rekey" the OS installation to use the production license key without having to rebuild the system? Or is it enough that we just bought the license, enough incase there is an audit and just have the license keyinternally assoicated with that box and if it ever needs to be rebuilt, we wouldhave it.

i have a 2008 install which has not been activated and it does allow me to change my product key, now i can't remember if an activated copy has that same feature in the computer properties window, but a better question would be if an MSDN copy will allow you to change keys to a retail copy

Hello, You may try refering to the following steps to change the product key to the retail production license key without having to rebuild the system. 1. Right-click Computer and select properties on the desktop 2. Click the Change product key option. 3. Enter the product key and activate Windows. Hope it helps.David Shen - MSFT
