Lotus Notes v8.5 calendar entries show the wrong time in remote thin clients
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 - Enterprise Edition Build: 3790 Service Pack 2 Problem: Lotus Notes v8.5 calendar entries show the wrong time in remote clients. They show the time from the server located in a different time zone. Symptoms: The Citrix server where Lotus Notes is published resides in Winnipeg, MB (Central Time Zone). When a user located in another time zone connects his thin client to our domain and uses Citrix to access Lotus Notes, they can create any entries in the Calendar with their intended times (e.g. User in Pacific Time Zone creates a Meeting entry scheduled for today at 3:00pm), but after it is saved, if the same user, or any other user from any Time Zone checks the entry, its time will be modified based on the Central Time Zone (in the previous example, the user will see that the Meeting is not set for 3:00pm, but for 1:00pm). This happens because when the user saves the entry, the time of the entry is saved as Central, not as the Local Time Zone. Note: We have brought this issue to IBM's attention first, but they have responded that this is a known issue between Microsoft and the Java application now used by Lotus Notes to do the Time Zone Redirection. IBM response: "Reported under SPR TMDS8MQMPY, and the APAR is LO64760. Starting in Xenapp 6, an Active Directory group policy is used for the time zone redirections. The registry keys that the client workstation used to pass values to are no longer used. As such it has been determined to be a problem with the Java installed within the Window's environment, and there is no current solution from a Notes perspective as the standard Notes client uses the Java information to collect the correct time zone information. Please report the problem to Microsoft as they will need to work with Oracle to correct the issue as all Java related programs related to date/time information will reflect the same behavior seen within the Standard Notes client as it is a Java based application." Question: Does Microsoft have a solution for this situation?

Hi Nathaniel, Strictly speaking, it's not a Microsoft problem. What IBM has suggested is that you get Microsoft involved (ideally via PSS) to try and assist, but that's different to them having an issue of their own for which they may have a hotfix, recommended configuration change, etc. It's not a particularly detailed response, so when they refer to Xenapp 6 utilising group policy, I can only make the assumption (given we don't run Xenapp) they might be referring to the following group policy setting: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection: Allow time zone redirection So, you might want to either run rsop.msc while in an active Citrix session, or use the GPMC to generate a remote RSOP logging set of information and see if this policy is either not set or set to Disabled. If it's another setting, for example one provided via an ADM or ADMX from either Citrix or Oracle (not likely to be the latter), then you'd have to look at that template instead. You might want to look at the e-mail or telephone support contact information found here if you elect to engage Microsoft on this topic.. Cheers, Lain
