Loopback Adapter won't install
I'm trying to install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter on a couple Windows 2008 R2 servers but get the following message on the "Completing the Add Hardware Wizard" screen:
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The system cannot find the file specified.
I'm not even provided the opportunity to browse for whatever file is missing.

try this way
Start -> Computer -> Right-click, Properties -> Device Manager -> Computer Name, Right-click, Add Legacy Hardware -> Next -> Install the hardware I manually select from a list -> Next -> Network Adapters -> Microsoft on the right,
Loopback adapter on the left -> Next

Yeah, the DVD has been in the drive and everything looks okay from that perspective.

Hello Mike,
Do as Syed said.
An Administrators or equivalent membership is the minimum required to complete these procedures.
Thanks.

Yup, I'm signed onto the servers with an account that is a member of the local Administrators group.

You can try this solution.
Download and then install the latest version of the network adapter driver on the computer.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click
OK. Locate and then delete the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Config
If your server is a domain controller, go to step 5. (This includes servers that are running Windows Small Business Server 2003.) If your server is not a domain controller, delete the following registry subkeys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters\ {<var>GUID</var>}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{<var>GUID</var>}
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click
OK. In the Systems Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click
Device Manager. In Device Manager, expand Network adapters, right-click the network adapter that you want, and then click
Uninstall. Restart the computer.

Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion “MYousufAli” provided and what is the result?
If the issue has not been fixed, I would like to suggest you export and backup the following registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
After that, please delete the REG_BINARY value “CONFIG” and restart the computer to reinstall the Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

Our security template appears to be the issue. I reapplied the standard template and was then able to install the loopback adapter. Now I have to figure out what's wrong with the template. We modify permissions on the C drive pretty heavily with the template,
so being that I originally got the error "The system cannot find the file specified", I'm thinking it has something to do with that.
