Lookup Issue with the DNS server
We have an installation of windows small business server 2003 installed on our network as a test environment with two network adapters. On there we have 5 LAN connected machines and 2 VPN clients as part of its own subnet. The server itself is a part of the main network provided by our firewall, which provides for it an IP address and allows it accses to the main network. The server cannot resolve names of other machines of the main network but can resolve all clients internally. However, even with this, the server can ping all machines, within both networks using an IP address. this capability is extended to all machines in the LAN except those on the VPN. I understand that our lookups are probably not setup correctly, but all resources attempted do not have this case noted. We desperately need to have the VPN clients, at the very least, capable of pinging an external machine using an IP address.

Hi, Thanks for the post. From your description, I understand that you have an installation of SBS2003 installed on your network as a test environment. The server cannot resolve names of other machines of the main network but can resolve all clients internally. Since the suggestion highly depends on your environment, could you describe the exact network and domain environment? If it is available, please draw a picture for the exact network and domain environment. For your reference, here is some useful information about this issue. Understanding forwarders http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782142.aspx Add a forward lookup zone http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739169.aspx Meanwhile, since it is related to SBS2003, you could post this issue to SBS public newsgroup: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs Hope this will help you with this issue.
