Logon Issues - what things to consider
Hi all.
Sorry if this should be in a different area in the forums....
I haven't found a good (updated) answer to this, so i thought I would ask again:
How long should it take to log in to a windows domain?
Just to clarify, this is a school setting, running Windows 7 clients (some trolleys of netbooks/laptops, others desktops), with Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. We have 2 DC's, along with separate student and teacher file servers, etc.
We are finding that, with a desktop or laptop running over a wired connection, it takes about 30sec-1min. Over wireless, it takes about 2mins to log in when there is minimal network traffic, and sometimes much longer (5-8mins) on heavier traffic
days, particularly if there are two classes logging in simultaneously in adjoining rooms.
While 2 mins for a wireless login is not too bad, I was just wanting to see what the ballpark figure would be for login, and if anyone had any good tweaks to speed things up. I have seen a few items over various forums, but nothing that seems to definitively
improve speeds.
Thanks in advance!
Nathan

Hiya,
Well you need to identify what part of the logon that takes time.
Any logon scripts?
GPO's applied at Logon?
Pretty much as you say youself, it sounds like a bandwith issue on the network. Common problem for wireless solutions, not scaled correctly. In your case, you might not be able to do anything about unless investing in additional access points/controllers
- Again depending on where the bottleneck is.
You could set up some monitoring on your wireless network, to confirm if indeed the network is the bottleneck.
1-2 minutes is a good logon time, 2-3 minuts is decent, 3-4 is too much. - Obviously it depends on what your running with your Logon - GPO's, Scripts etc.

Hi Nathan,
There is no specific time for a domain logon. It totally depends on your scenarios.
You may experience connectivity issues or performance issues when you connect a mobile PC that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7 to a wireless access point

To identify this issue, you could enable logging in the Gpsvc.log file.
