Log off from RDC in Server 2008 R2 SP1 sometimes not working
Dear, The setup is a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with remote desktop services configured. It rarely happens that when a user is trying to log off from the remote desktop it does not logs him off. When this is happening also the remote desktop environment is not working correctly: i.e. Office files do not open due to bad command line. This is solved by force log off as admin. What can be causing this ? What should we look for in the logs ?

Hi, You might point the root cause. In some cases, this issue could be caused by some processes do not shutdown properly when logging off. I would perform the following suggestions to narrow down this issue: 1. Please disable printer redirection temporarily and test the result by take the action below: To do this you need to ENABLE the Policy setting: Do not allow client printer redirection: You can find this here: Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection And then open a command line on the server to do a GPupdate /force. After this log off and on with the user account again and check the result. 2. There is another possible cause for this issue related to the the Windows Defender Service. Please verify if the Windows Defender service is running and disable it by following these steps: - Please disable the Windows Defender Service in the services console. - Please stop the windows defender from trying to startup by deleting the link for Defender under the following registry key (after exporting this key for backup purposes): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - Restart the server and test the result with a new user account. 3. Please temporarily disable all of firewall to test this issue again, and have you install the VNC on the server side? Because I found someone met the same error when installing the VNC on the server side. 4. Please perform the msconfig and tried to disable all third party services under services and startup. Clean boot with MSCONFIG 1) Run MSCONFIG.EXE. (MSCONFIG is a built-in tool for Windows XP\2003 systems.) 2) In the Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click "Disable All". 3) In the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK. (This will temporarily prevent third-party programs from running automatically during start-up.) 4) Restart the computer. Does the problem still persist? If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You can use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Thanks.
