Licensing Questions Server 2008
For businesses with VL can you install Server 2008 Standard Edition, then down the road if you decide you need Enterprise Edition you can purchase a key and enter it to unlock the Enterprise features? Kind of like Vista?

After having tried on the RTM version I must say no. An inplace upgrade should be possible, but I haven't tried this and found no information about it. Anyone from MSFT wish to clarify?

Hi, I agree with Joachim that you should perform an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2008 Standard to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. It's supported to upgrade form Windows Server 2008 Standard to Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. Please refer the following article to learn more information about in-place upgrade, which also encloses the upgrading steps. Guide for Upgrading to Windows Server 2008 http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/f1713937-0b3f-4b0d-9d31-410598278f6e1033.mspx?mfr=true For licensing questions, you can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact information in their locations. I hope this helps.
