LanmanServer Service Weirdness
Hi All, Hopefully someone would be kind enough to shed some light on this strange issue I'm having with one of our SQL servers. The box is 2008 R2 Ent. The 'server' service won't start. Whenever I try to force start it I receive the error 1075 "The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion." This also dumps the following error in my application log - "The Server service depends the following service: Svr. This service might not be installed." I have checked through the registry and had a look at the lanmanserver entries at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\ DependOnService entries are: SamSS Svr MSiSCSI All of these services are started and appear to have no problems whatsoever. I've checked the dependencies against similar servers and they seem correct. After multiple restarts of the server and digging round in the registry a lot, I don't quite know where to turn now. Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance guys. Neil

Hi, I would like to suggest you export the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver] as a backup and import a new one from the link below: Lanmanserver service registry for Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise: http://cid-49401e22fd9c1bd2.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/LanmanServer.zip After that, please restart the computer to check the result. Might be a dumb question but is File and Printer Sharing bound to the connection? Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional -Microsoft MVP [Windows]

An update for you all. After importing the registry file Arthur uploaded and restarting the server, the lanmanserver service DID start. However, it also screwed up file share permissions. To resolve we had to change the logon account for the server service, reset it back to Local Service account and then restart the service. All is well now. Thanks for all your efforts.
