LAN Device ordering in Windows 2008 R2
<!-- [if gte mso 10]> <mce:style>
Hi Support
I'm using a motherboard with four onboard LAN ports, two LAN ship Intel 82576.
We found LAN MAC address is not according to LAN port ordering in Windows 2008 R2.
Normally, LAN MAC and LAN ports sequence should be proportional like the follwing.
LAN Port
MAC
LAN1 003048BFA86C
LAN2 003048BFA86D
LAN3 003048BFA86E
LAN4 003048BFA86F
But sometime we see the following difference, LAN3 and LAN4 MAC switched.
LAN Port
MAC
LAN1 003048BFA86C
LAN2 003048BFA86D
LAN3 003048BFA8
6F
LAN4 003048BFA8
6E
System configuration:
X8DTU-LN4F+, R1.0
BIOS: 2.0a
CPU: X5650 *1
OS: Windows 2008 R2
LAN Driver: 15.5 (
\15.5\PRO1000\Winx64\NDIS62)
EEPROM: Rev 004 (576MII04.EEP & 576NM04.EEP)
Is there any rule to explain this?
Please advise if any idea to fix this.
Thanks
Sincerely
Marcusle

Hi,
What do you mean with the labels LAN1, LAN2, LAN3, LAN4 ?
Does these labels are the names of the "Network connections" you see in "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" ?
If "YES", just right click on them and rename them as you want.

The lables LAN 1,2,3,4 are Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection ports in Windows Command Prompt.
Type "ipconfig /all" then you can see all the ports listed.

If you prefer "Command Prompt" to rename, you can use:
>netsh interface set interface name="LAN3" newname="New name LAN5"
(see >netsh interface set interface /? )
But I think it is easier to rename with the mouse and right-click ...
Anyway, I am trying to explain that these names are a user(administrator) controlled action, not Windows conspiracy.
In your case, may be the origin of the "wrong" order with the names is the "wrong" order Windows has recognized the devices in the driver installation proccess.

Actually, LAN driver has to preload during Windows 2008 installation.
I did use same LAN drvier and EEROM revision, system BIOS revision, board revision are all same.
LAN ordering in Windows 2008 are totally different on each different boards.
Is this problem LAN driver related?
Any Microsoft tech document can explain this symptom?
