KMS Server Business Rules Question for College Campus
We are looking to deploy a KMS licensing system on our main college campus now that we are moving in the direction of Windows 7. While this question is not necessarily technical in nature it is very important. What needs to be done to prevent students from getting "free" activations from our KMS system? The way our campus is set up we have a residential network and a main campus network. We have blocked access to the KMS system from the residential network via firewall rules, however what we need to know is how to stop students from bringing their laptops to class with them and getting "free" activations using our KMS? Our KMS server cannot be reached over the Internet. What have other colleges / universities done in this situation? Is it something that we should be worried about (because if the student leaves campus for a length of time it will not re-activate)? I am looking for best practices or any advice that can be offered. Thanks!!!

Hi Timothy,
As I know, KMS server does not provide a way to restrict activation from some specific computers. To block activation from laptops, you may consider using 802.1x authenticated wired access to control who can access the network, i.e. whether the laptops brought in can access the main campus network. If the access is blocked, these laptop will not be able to contact KMS server and get activated.
For more information about 802.1x authenticated wired access, please refer to the following links:

I suggest contacting your local Microsoft Volume Licensing Activation Center for detailed information:

Hope it helps.
