KB 981506
When I attempt to install KB981506 on my Windows Server R2, IIS7.0 machine the installer program displays a message, "This update does not apply to your system". I'm not sure what's going on here. I sure I'm request the version for "Windows 7/WindowsServer 2008 R2". When I check the roster of files at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981506/en-us I find that files on my system are older than those listed. Thanks, --Mark

Hi, For Server 2008 R2 you need to apply the x64 Version. http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/Windows%207/WindowsServer%202008%20R2/sp1/Fix309342/7600/free/409208_intl_x64_zip.exe You can try the above if it can apply to the Server 2008 R2.Hope you find the info useful

Are you sure? This is an old box with a Xeon processor. The Computer Properties page indicated a 32 bit operating system. The Microsoft KB download page has a selector option that chose this version for me. --Mark

If it is a 32 bit OS, then the i386 version is the one that should be used as the 64 bit version will not be compatible. In the c:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file, there should be additional information about why it did not install. Can you post from the first instance of the string "981506" to the end of the log file for further troubleshooting? -- Mike Burr

Hi, Just have a try to see if the 64bit hotfix can be installed. As Meinolf mentioned, Windows Server 2008 R2 only have 64bit but not 32bit.Shaon Shan| TechNet Subscriber Support in forum| If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

OK, I get it now. Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are not the same. Sadly, I can't find a fix for this issue that KB981506 solves for my SP2 install. --Mark

I am encountering the same issue as above ('This update does not apply to your system""). Running 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 64 bit edition. Running the x64 version of the hotfix. The windowupdate.log shows these messages. I didn't see any resolution to this issue. Can someone provide guidance and/or suggestions for next steps ? Seems this hitfix is a resolution to the CTL issue i'm encountering, if i could only get it to install. thanks. 2011-06-28 14:36:13:351 828 288 AU AU setting next sqm report timeout to 2011-06-29 20:36:13 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c Misc =========== Logging initialized (build: 7.5.7601.17514, tz: -0600) =========== 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c Misc = Process: C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c Misc = Module: C:\Windows\system32\wuapi.dll 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c COMAPI ----------- COMAPI: IUpdateServiceManager::AddScanPackageService ----------- 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c COMAPI - ServiceName = Windows Update Standalone Installer 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 2540 b7c COMAPI - ScanFileLocation = C:\28b3ff21ca822b293a\wsusscan.cab 2011-06-28 15:25:59:579 828 9c0 Misc Validating signature for C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ScanFile\7841ad77-e5f6-4e5c-84a0-79245e69376b\Source.cab: 2011-06-28 15:25:59:595 828 9c0 Misc Microsoft signed: Yes 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 9c0 DtaStor Default service for AU is {9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77} 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 2540 b7c COMAPI - Added scan package service, ServiceID = {7841AD77-E5F6-4E5C-84A0-79245E69376B} Third party service 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 2540 b7c COMAPI ------------- 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 2540 b7c COMAPI -- START -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 2540 b7c COMAPI --------- 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 2540 b7c COMAPI <<-- SUBMITTED -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent ************* 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent ** START ** Agent: Finding updates [CallerId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent ********* 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent * Online = Yes; Ignore download priority = No 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent * Criteria = "DeploymentAction='Installation'" 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent * ServiceID = {7841AD77-E5F6-4E5C-84A0-79245E69376B} Third party service 2011-06-28 15:25:59:704 828 854 Agent * Search Scope = {Machine} 2011-06-28 15:25:59:876 828 854 PT +++++++++++ PT: Synchronizing server updates +++++++++++ 2011-06-28 15:25:59:876 828 854 PT + Offline serviceId = {7841AD77-E5F6-4E5C-84A0-79245E69376B} 2011-06-28 15:25:59:876 828 854 PT WARNING: Cached cookie has expired or new PID is available 2011-06-28 15:26:02:315 828 854 PT +++++++++++ PT: Synchronizing extended update info +++++++++++ 2011-06-28 15:26:02:315 828 854 PT + Offline serviceId = {7841AD77-E5F6-4E5C-84A0-79245E69376B} 2011-06-28 15:26:02:377 828 854 Agent * Found 0 updates and 52 categories in search; evaluated appl. rules of 115 out of 238 deployed entities 2011-06-28 15:26:02:377 828 854 Agent ********* 2011-06-28 15:26:02:377 828 854 Agent ** END ** Agent: Finding updates [CallerId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:26:02:377 828 854 Agent ************* 2011-06-28 15:26:02:377 2540 fac COMAPI >>-- RESUMED -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:26:02:393 2540 fac COMAPI - Updates found = 0 2011-06-28 15:26:02:393 2540 fac COMAPI --------- 2011-06-28 15:26:02:393 2540 fac COMAPI -- END -- COMAPI: Search [ClientId = wusa] 2011-06-28 15:26:02:393 2540 fac COMAPI ------------- 2011-06-28 15:26:11:444 2540 b7c COMAPI ----------- COMAPI: IUpdateServiceManager::RemoveService ----------- 2011-06-28 15:26:11:444 2540 b7c COMAPI - ServiceId = {7841ad77-e5f6-4e5c-84a0-79245e69376b} 2011-06-28 15:26:11:476 2540 b7c COMAPI IUpdateService removing volatile scan package service, serviceID = {7841AD77-E5F6-4E5C-84A0-79245E69376B} 2011-06-28 15:26:11:476 828 280 Agent WARNING: WU client fails CClientCallRecorder::RemoveService with error 0x80248014 2011-06-28 15:26:11:476 2540 b7c COMAPI WARNING: ISusInternal::RemoveService failed, hr=80248014 erl
