We had the same/similar issue today and had to remove the two hotfixes from the server in order to resolve the issue. Once removed the error stopped, application pool became stable and the site would resolve once again. Removed the following updates: HotFixID: KB976767 Description: Security Update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976767 HotFixID: KB976771 Description: Security Update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976771

Hi, As this issue is related to IIS, I suggest discussing it in our IIS fourm. http://forums.iis.net/ Tim Quan - MSFT

We have a thread on forums.iis.net about this now. http://forums.iis.net/t/1168665.aspx So focus your queries there. No reports as far as I can see with other related KB it appears only to effect Windows 2008 SP1

This is not an IIS problem its a .net framework problem. It may only manifest on systems with IIS installed but it is not an IIS problem. System.ServiceModel.dll is referencing System.dll. It expects to find the type System.Security.Authentication.ExtendedProtection.ChannelBinding in system.dll and its not there. Some patch that was deliverd changed system.servicemodel.dll without changing system.dll. I assume that I am missing some other patch. I have a patch that just wont apply for some reason kb974417 no matter how many times I try to apply it, it wont apply no error just continues to try an apply the patch. may be unrelated though. This is also not a 2008 only problem I am on XP SP3 IIS5 dotnet 3.5 SP1

On XP this is the same issue as http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxnetcom/thread/853e2c1e-9216-46b3-b8e7-0594b64f01b4 So its definately not an IIS problem (on xp at least) removing KB976769v2 fixes the issue. Any idea when a patch might come out. I am pretty worried that my end users are going to start getting this issue.

Hello, I am just wondering if there is any more news on this issue, so far uninstalling the patch fixes the issue but as it requires a server reboot each time it is not overly practical and I don't want to have to disable Automatic Updates. Lee

Hi Lee, The only workaround we were able to find so far is to install SP2 if you are running on 2008 SP1. Hope this helps... You might also want to check out the latest comments at http://forums.iis.net/t/1168665.aspx....

bt07, you SAVED ME!!! I took your advice after about two days of working on this, and upgraded to Server 2008 SP2 from 2008 SP1. It immediately fixed my problem! I was running a SharePoint environment that broke after a failed upgrade. When trying to load central admin or any sites, it would prompt me for every other item that the page loaded, as if it couldn't maintain the security information or something. After every prompt the error log would log the message posted above about: Exception: System.TypeLoadException Message: Could not load type 'System.Security.Authentication.ExtendedProtection.ChannelBinding' from assembly' I tried everything else with no success until I saw your post. THANK YOU!!
